Free Burger, Shake, or Egg Cream FAIL (Updated)

Following in the footsteps of their newest offshoot HB Burger (who have been handing out free milkshake coupons for weeks on various corners near their restaurant) the actual Heartland Brewery wants to remind people that they have burgers and shakes of their own! They’ll be handing out coupons for a free burger, shake, or egg cream at the NYC & Co “Information Booth” (on 7th Ave. btw. 52+53rd) tomorrow, and Thursday (7/29-30) starting at 9am. It’s a “while supplies last” kind of thing on both days, so you might want to get there early.

Urgh. Disregard this entire post. The NYCGO intern who emailed about me about this giveaway got confused between HB Burger and Heartland Brewery (two different restaurants!) and the difference between a free burger, and a free egg cream. The coupons that will be handed out tomorrow and Thursday are for HB Burger, and are the same coupons they’ve been handing out on 43rd street for a month. (Free egg cream, homemade soda, or mini sundae w/ purchase. No burger.) It’s a tough economy, and I don’t want some poor schmuck of an intern to get in trouble or fired… so I’m going to try and contain my anger. Perhaps with some free ice cream…

Miss Softee: We all know about Mister Softee, but did you know there is a "Miss Softee" who sells ice cream in Midtown?  She normally parks on 40th & 5th from about 1pm until 6:30pm and has"daily cone specials". If you'd like to stalk follow her, you can on Twitter (natch.)

More Changes to the XPL Empire

photo.jpgLooks like there have been a lot of changes since XPL took 5th place in Street Meat Palooza 2. Not only did the owners of XPL sell their 3rd Ave. cart to the guy who mans it, but they took away the XPL cart that used to be parked on Broadway btw. 53+54th.  The same guy still operates on that block, but out of a different cart now.  Based on the comments, I don’t think anything has changed at the 3rd Ave. location, but the food from the Broadway cart didn’t look like XPL style food (even though the guy manning the Broadway cart hasn’t changed.) Anybody a big fan of the Broadway cart and know what’s up?  Let us know in the comments…

Famous Halal Guys and Five Guys Are Great Hangover Food

Mixed Combo @ the famous Chicken & Rice Cart on 53rd & 6th Ave.

If you thought the Midtown Lunch commenters could get nasty, check out this comment on Something Awful asking for the best drunk/hangover food:

“Chicken and lamb over rice from a halal cart. Squirt enough harissa over it to scare the evil right out of you (and burn your o-ring when you’ve got the beer shits the next morning). Preferably from the 53rd & 6th cart.

Another commenter agreed, and added his own recomendation:

“I would take that cart behind the school and get it pregnant. Drunk, I almost always swing Mexican. If not Mexican, then Five Guys.”

Nice.

Macchiato Espresso Bar Revisited… For the First Time

It’s been almost three years since Macchiato Espresso Bar opened on 44th btw. Lex+3rd, selling their line of Italian coffee, sandwiches, salads, and pastries.  When it first opened, I posted my first impression (meh) which drew the ire of the owner because I hadn’t actually eaten any of the food or tries the coffee.  At the time I just wasn’t interested in trying another turkey and swiss sandwich for $9.  So sue me.  Well, it’s taken me almost three years… but I’ve finally gotten enough positive emails to warrant actually trying Macchiato Espresso Bar.  Well not me, but our resident coffee and baked goods expert Kathy YL Chan (from A Passion For Food).  I thought this place would be right up her alley, and asked her to check it out and report back.  Here’s what she found…

Welcome to Macchiato Espresso Bar on 44th Street, the last thing you’d expect to discover in discover in midtown. Coming in from 3rd Avenue, the bright blue entrance looks like some sort of strange oasis. The Bar exudes a Euro-trash meets midtown business vibe. Music is energetic, and the counter service is knowledgeable, efficient. Prices are high, though quality justifies to a certain extent.

HB Burger Extends $9.95 ML Special Through Labor Day

DSC03501

Got this email from the founder of HB Burger (on 43rd btw. B’way+6th) on Friday:

Zach, I want to thank you for making the special combo promotion available to your readers. I was concerned about our ability to manage the flow to maintain the quality of our guests’ experience. Now that I know that we can do that and accommodate Midtown Lunch readers, I’d be happy to make this same promotion available to your readers only, through Labor Day. Of course, this is completely your call, but I am making it available.

Done and done, right? Any objections from the gallery? [Assumed sound of crickets.] Very good. We accept. (FYI, Labor Day is September 7th.)

Cer Te Wants You To Pick Their Next Special Sandwich

certe_sandwiches

Whoever does marketing for Cer te deserves a gold star.  Since we launched the Midtown Lunch Sandwich Challenge Cer Te, on 55th btw. 5+6th, has used it as their own personal promotional machine- which of course was ok with us because we were getting amazing sandwiches.  There was the Thanksgiving Dip (which I believe is still available on Thursdays), the Bayou, the Primavera, the Mexican torta, and the soft shelled crab.  And of course that whole lobster roll thing, which was kind of an honorary entry.

The slightly upscale deli took the month of July off, but they plan on coming back with a bang in September and want you to help pick the sandwich of the month.  Every Monday and Tuesday, today through the end of August, they will be serving 5 (yes, five) special Midtown Lunch sandwiches and asking you to vote for the best one.  Shameless promotion designed to get Midtown Lunch’ers to come in and eat five sandwiches?  Of course. But once you see some of these sandwiches, maybe you won’t mind as much.

Check out the list after the jump…

Rachel Maddow is a Midtown Lunch’er: 10th Avenue is becoming quite the Mexican hotspot.  In addition to out of bounds Midtown Lunch faves Tehuitzingo (10th btw. 47+48th) and Tulcingo del Valle (on 10th btw. 46+47th), there is also La Rosita (on 47th btw. 10+11th) which according to Rachel Maddow makes the best sopes and tacos. Don't trust people who work for MSNBC?  Profiled Lunch'er Jamie is down with the place as well. (And they deliver.)
