Stick to Fried Chicken Tacos at Shifty’s

Shifty’s Tacos opened recently in Brewerytown with a small menu of tacos and a few sides. Order at the counter and you can sit at the tables inside or outside at a sort of wooden bar you can stand at (and bring your pet). Tacos (3 per order) range from $5 to $8 dollars.

Farm Truck Showcases Local Farms, Food Producers, and Artists

Today Luncher John gives us the run down of another local food truck

The growth in the food truck scene is positive not just for those operating trucks but also for local food producers. Most of these food trucks source their ingredients from local farms and bakeries, which keeps the food fresh and costs down. Farm Truck follows the same philosophy in showcasing the high quality food produced by area farms and bakeries, along with local art that is often hung up on the truck itself. More permanently, it is decorated in an array of colors and with several farm animals. Farm Truck has been making stops at The Porch at 30th Street, City Hall Courtyard and the Navy Yard.

The Latin American “French Dip” Sandwich at Pura Vida

Located in a residential block of Northern Liberties, Pura Vida humbly brings latin cooking to the neighborhood.  The menu appears slightly Mexican, but more inclusive than that, with Guatemalan tamales for appetizers and vegetarian chorizo. Pura Vida, after all, is the Costa Rican slogan for a super chill lifestyle. Going along with that, the funky decor inside this small, corner BYOB includes Christmas lights and a raffia umbrella.

Spruced Up Luncheonette Food from Cousin’s Grubhouse

Cousin’s Grubhouse, a luncheonette in South Philly, was revamped under new ownership in March of this year, though I have no idea what the previous Cousin’s was like.   Few luncheonette style places like this are left  in the city; the kind Guy Fieri would visit on Triple D.  The menu includes all the breakfast staples you can think of, plus meat filled sandwiches, and things like hot dogs with peanut butter and bananas, chicken and waffles, and pancakes stuffed with bacon. Its a lot of comfort food to choose from.

Fresco Tortilla for Big Tacos in the Bellevue

It isn’t easy to keep up with the line up at the Bellevue’s basement food court. They go through new restaurants like my sister goes through boyfriends, meaning the turnaround is real quick.

Fresco Tortilla replaced the corner spot occupied by Maui Dog’s. It features reasonably priced, semi-Americanized Mexican food- which is not necessarily a bad thing. The counter service is friendly and speedy. The menu features the usual suspects.

Lets Taco ‘Bout the Tacos El Rodeo Truck

My intention was to pick up some groceries at the Italian Market, but I didn’t see a single thing that tempted me. I kept walking down Washington Ave. A brightly painted truck came in to view and I remembered hearing about an elusive (no website, no twitter!) newer South Philly taco truck. Tacos El Rodeo Mobil Food Catering Truck does tacos, tortas, burritos, quesodillas, and sincronizadas with whatever filings they have that day. These might include chorizo, tripe, or even cabeza.  Tacos are $2, so I got 5 (sin cabeza).

Asian Fusion Tacos from Stix Eatery

Stix Eatery opened quietly a few months ago on 12th and Fitzwater- kind of a no mans land for eating. It operates as a cafe (bubble tea included) and Asian fusion restaurant. The Grand Opening sign was still up, and thats what caught my eye as I biked by. Peeking at the menu I noticed Asian tacos and wings, which were enough reason to stop for lunch.
