What’s in a Name at 12 St Cantina

It’s hard to keep up with the fun snacks at 12th St Cantina in Reading Terminal. They are always rotating new things that tempt me as I walk by. While burritos and quesadillas are always available, I prefer just picking what snacks behind the glass look best to me. Last visit I only had room to sample the duck chili.

Beauty is in the Pie of the Beholder: Pie Fillings from AJ Pickle Patch and Salads

Today, Nick from My Inner Fatty is satisfying his sweet tooth with  the pie fillings at AJs in Reading Terminal.

At some point, everyone has replaced a meal with dessert.  Why?  Because it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread.  Deep down, you know it’s wrong, you know it’s unhealthy, but it’s so freakin’ good that you just can’t help but indulge in this sinful activity from time to time.  It’s human nature.  Seriously though, if you stumbled across a refrigerator cabinet full of beautiful custards, cobblers, and puddings, you can’t honestly tell me you wouldn’t immediately consider making it a meal by ordering a cupful… or two… or three.

AJ Pickles & Salad Patch (or is it Pickles Patch & Salad?  Their sign is too ambiguous…) is a shop nestled in the Northwestern corner nook of Reading Terminal Market.  They sell pickles and salad obviously, but that’s not what I was there for.  Despite the name, they’re also home to a collection of  pie fillings, because why bother with all that crust when it’s the good stuff you are really after.

Back to Beck’s for some Whiskey in my Dessert

It had been about 8 months since my last visit to Beck’s Cajun in Reading Terminal to try the po’boy and a friend had pointed out that I missed one of their best dishes- the bread pudding. I had to return to try it, plus some other snacks I didn’t get to the first time. Some might criticize the authenticity of Beck’s, having never been to New Orleans I am not one of them. But no critic can hate on the bread pudding. My friend was correct in pointing out my omission, this dessert is not to be missed.

What Exactly is Frank Famous for Anyway?

Back at Reading Terminal, Famous Franks A Lot is claiming to be both famous and the “best of philly”. Frank has a lot going on. The menu is the kind I would be thrilled with as a 7 year old attending my classmates birthday party. Would we call this American-Polish fusion cuisine? Besides the burgers, hot dog, and chicken,  fried pierogies, kielbasa, and various wursts  join the mix.  Platters are $8.15 and come with 2 sides and a buttered roll. All other menu items are priced lower than that.

Fish is Delish, But Clam is my Jam

Back at my holy grail of eats, Reading Terminal, I wanted to try a more random, less frequented spot for lunch. Wan’s Seafood sells a lot of… well, seafood clearly. But most of what they sell is fish to take home and make yourself. They also do platters and sandwiches of fried seafood, which was just what I was in the mood for. Considering I was a person who rarely ate fish a few years ago, I sure do love me some fried fish in my old age. I ordered the flounder platter, which was fried up fast. Too fast for me to yell- STOP, when I noticed that clam strips were on the menu. I was super bummed out; a fried clam strip platter is even more awesome than fried fish in my eyes. Luckily, the fish held its own and my day was not ruined.
