Hot Tamales From Los Amigos Meat Market

Strolling through the Italian Market I noticed a sign for tamales on the door of a bodega. Yes, please.

Los Amigos Meat Market sells things like Jarritos, tomatillos, dried chiles, cotija cheese, homemade tortilla chips (ooo!), and of course meats. But I was just there to get my tamales and get out, so that I might eat them on a stoop in the sunshine.

Can I Handle A Healthy Lunch from Pure Fare?

Pure Fare is not really my kind of restaurant in theory. It is all about healthy and calorie counting. Scary!  But I shouldn’t judge a restaurant by their calorie count. Besides, focusing on detox might not be the worst idea after St. Patty’s Day weekend.

Melty, Girthy Goodness From the Say Cheese Truck

Say Cheese is now in its second semester of serving their grilled cheeses from their truck on the Temple campus (and LOVE park on most Fridays). On the particular day I visited, the Temple art students had shown their love by crochet-bombing the truck with a color crochet bib. And if college students give the grilled cheese the seal of approval, they must be doing something right.

Doner Kebob at Old City’s Leyla Turkish Cuisine

Today, we are getting a report on a new Turkish restaurant in Old City from profiled luncher Stephanie.

I prefer to trek west for Middle Eastern, seeking out Kabobeesh. Marrakesh Express and Manakeesh to satiate my kafta and doner kebab cravings. When Leyla Turkish Cuisine opened up in Olde City a mere half-block away from my office, the lure of convenience and the possibility of a new lunchtime go-to brought me to its doors. Leyla is open for lunch at 11am, Tuesday through Sunday.

Leyla boasts a colorful menu of exciting options, such as Yogurtlu Adana and Sac Kavurma. Unfortunately, most of these dishes are over the $10 mark. Not to despair, lunch budget-friendly salads and appetizers dot the menu and there is also a back page with selections of sandwiches, paninis, and burgers under $10.

In the Dominican Republic You Can Pet Your Pig and Eat it Too

No profile volunteers for today (email me slackers! the people want to know what you eat. jamie@midtownlunch.com), so I will instead share my awesome pork experience from when I snuck away to Puerto Plata last week.

On my way from the airport I asked my taxi driver the most important question, “Donde podemos comer lechon asado? Where can we eat roast pork?” He responded, “En todos partes! Everywhere!” That is my kind of country.
