PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Jody”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Jody who mostly eats within a few block radius of work, but is willing to travel farther afield in nice weather for things like wings.

Where you work: 6th Ave. between Watts and Grand

Age: 32

Favorite Kinds of Food: Things I can eat without utensils: Tacos, pizza, kati rolls, sopes, wings, moo shu, shawarma on laffa…

Least Favorite Foods: Frozen fish sticks.  They’re the only thing my mom would let me get away with not eating when I was a kid.

Favorite Lunches Downtown: Felini on semolina from Alidoro on Sullivan (btw. Spring & Prince); Chorizo sopes from Papatzul on Grand (at W. Broadway); Grilled wings from South Houston on W. Broadway (at Grand); Miso-glazed salmon from Mooncake Foods on Watts (btw. Thompson & 6th); Chicken cutlet parmesan from Torrisi Italian Specialties on Mulberry (at Prince).

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Mooncake Foods is so quick and easy, so it’s kind of the default lunch spot. It’s tasty and reasonably priced though so no complaints from me. Read more »

Fatal Tortilla Flaw Mars First (And Otherwise Delicious) Taste Of Kimchi Taco Truck

The Korean taco truck explosion that started with Korilla BBQ Truck and continued with Big D’s Grub Truck now includes Kimchi Taco Truck, which made its Manhattan debut in the FiDi yesterday despite getting hopes up in midtown last week. I wanted to see how their goods compared with Big D’s since they have some similar taco fillings and the price for three tacos is $7 at both trucks. Kimchi also has some interesting sides like kimchi arancini and Korean BBQ nachos. Tacos and fried rice balls? Sold!

Half Off At Yushi: You have until the end of the day to get 50% off at Yushi in the World Financial Center. There are a couple of different options that you can check out here, but basically you can either get $14 worth of food at lunch time for $7 or $20 worth of food for $10 later in the day. Either way, it fits into the ML budget.

Latest Chain Hitting Maiden Lane: Potbelly Sandwich Shop

The stretch of Maiden Lane that has pretty much nothing but chain restaurants is about to get one more. According to a tweet from the Downtown Alliance, Chicago-based Potbelly Sandwich Shop has signed a lease next to Goodburger at 101 Maiden Lane. I’m guessing this means the empty space next to Hot Clay Oven, since there’s nothing next to Goodburger but a street and parking garage. There are a lot of east coast locations of Potbelly, but none in the city according to their Web site. I can’t say I’m super excited about another sandwich shop but I’ll save judgment until a taste test.

Kimchi Taco Truck Making Downtown Debut!: There might be a lot of dirty looks floating around offices in the FiDi today as the Kimchi Taco Truck finally parks in Manhattan. They'll be on Hanover Sq., serving tacos, cheesesteaks and some kimchi-esque sides starting at noon. Also on the ML Downtown Twitter Tracker, Schnitzel & Things is on Hudson in Soho along with the Sweetery truck.

Shinju Sushi’s Lunch Box Is A Gut-Busting Bargain

Sometimes you want good quality sushi in a nice setting, and sometimes you just want some cheap Japanese food to eat in a random public indoor location or at your desk. Enter Shinju Sushi on Pearl St. (btw. Pine & Wall), that may give you the most in their lunch box for the least amount of money in the FiDi. I went in with low expectations for what my $8 lunch box would contain, and other than one fail I was pleasantly surprised. This isn’t Haru, but at least they make their sushi fresh!
