Earl’s Court Closed For Mysterious Renovations

While walking by Earl’s Court on John St. (at Gold) late last week I noticed that the lights were out and the above sign was on the door. It’s probably not a good sign when a place like this that takes up a huge chunk of real estate closes for renovations after less than a year, or that their Web site is similarly under renovation. The concept of a huge food court had seemed exciting before it opened and it was revealed that it contained basically every lame offering of an airport food court with some decent coffee and cupcakes (and alcohol) thrown in for good measure. Guess we’ll have to see what happens if and when Earl’s Court reopens.

Sazon’s Chicken Jibarito Sandwich: For When Fried Plantains Sound Better Than Bread

There aren’t a lot of Puerto Rican food options downtown unless you count Sandra’s Food Spot Cart on Nassau St. in the Financial District, or lump West Side Coffee Shop or Sophie’s Cuban together in that vague category of “Latin food.” There is, however, Sazon on Reade St. (btw. Church & W. Broadway) in Tribeca. Yes, it’s a fancy take on Puerto Rican food, but the lunch menu has a few options at the $10 or below mark. I decided to try out their take on the jibarito – the sandwich with fried plantains in place of bread – and was pretty happy with what I got.

Pasteles Are Back At Sandra’s Food Spot Cart!

I know some of you have been wondering when pasteles are served at Sandra’s Food Spot Cart on Nassau St. (btw. Liberty & Cedar). I checked with Sandra a month or two ago after someone asked and was told they would be back toward the end of October when the weather got cooler, and when walking by yesterday there were signs all over the front of the cart saying they now have them. You can order by the dozen in advance, or find them on Fridays as a special for $3.50 each. They had varieties including chicken or pork and you can get them with or without rice & beans and salad.
