Another New Pie Face Opening On 34th And 3rd

Last week, we mentioned a second Midtown West location of Pie Face is replacing the Guy & Gallard on 36th & 7th. Turns out, there’s another Midtown Pie Face coming to the north east corner of 34th street and 3rd avenue, next to Carl’s Steaks. According to Grubstreet, this spot will open in the fall, before the new west side location, which will soon follow. Adorable Aussie meat pies for all!

A Free Shot for Everyone at Slattery’s Midtown Pub

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so I thought maybe it was time to introduce a happy hour column to the site. Every week, our Happy Hour Correspondent posts about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

Ever since moving to an Irish neighborhood in Queens, Irish pubs have become very dear to me. They’re a place where I feel at home, I know I’ll get a good laugh, and the drinks flow promptly and without pretense. I noticed that Mamacita included Slattery’s Midtown Pub (36th btw. 5th and Madison) in a list of bars showing the World Cup in 2010, and that made me happy since I watch a lot of football (soccer). But the pub hadn’t received a review from Midtown Lunch. I thought I’d use that as an excuse take the opportunity to check it out.

Avoid the Soups and Stick to the Buns at Fuji Bakery

Fuji Bakery entrance

Peeling back the culinary underbelly is one of the fun things about working in Midtown – hell, that’s why we’re all here looking at this, at least I should hope so. You keep hoping, waiting for that shining beacon, that one place you never knew about or even knew to look for despite the omnipresent eye of Google and the caring, wonderful, universally intelligent and physically attractive contributors of Midtown Lunch. Fuji Bakery, nestled in the middle of nowhere at 224 West 35th between 7th and 8th, strikes you as that place out of nowhere. Without a menu in the window or any real welcoming signage, it strikes you as an industrial food production facility. Is this a Chinatown transplant that we didn’t know jack about? Do the steam-table empire of Ming Du (formerly Ying Du) and the noodle-soup warriors faithful need to up the ante? Only one way to find out.

Flatiron Lunch: Cambodian Cuisine Torsu Truck Hits Flatiron

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

We really try to listen to our readers. Especially when they are also our friends. So when news of a Cambodian truck in the Flatiron district popped up in the Forums AND my friend, Profiled Lunch’er “Jessica”, messaged me about it, I clearly had check it out a.s.a.p.

Before even going, I did some snooping online to try to scope out the menu and strategize about what to order. First, I found UltraClay’s post about visiting the truck near Washington Square Park one night. Based on his experience, I knew to avoid ordering the sandwich. On the truck’s own site, the rambling and sad story from the owner of Cambodian Cuisine Torsu, Jerry Ley, about being screwed out of a restaurant space in Brooklyn, was distracting. Not to mention, the Menu on Wheels page is pretty illegible. Taking all this into account, I went into the situation fairly unprepared, but with the comforting fact that I was supporting a struggling small business owner.

Bian Dang and Pastel OUT at Food Gallery 32

Food Gallery 32 outside

Only yesterday we were nodding our heads at Robert Sietsema’s love letter to Food Gallery 32, and in particular The Village Voice’s ode to Bian Dang’s awesome porkchops, when we received a shocking tweet from @CaraPaige. “No more Bian Dang” at Food Gallery 32, we were informed. Sadly, we’ve confirmed that to be the case. Instead of awesome deep fried Taiwanese goodies, a new stall, dubbed “Mr. Fish” has replaced Bian Dang. And instead of Korea’s quixotic take on Italian food, a stall called “Doyaji Pork House” has replaced Pastel.

More photos and menus of the newcomers after the jump.

Monsieur Singh Brings Lassi Bars to Midtown

DSC_0994
Last week I was excited to discover of Monsieur Singh’s Lassi Bars Cart selling frozen lassi, an Indian yogurt drink, on a stick in Union Square for $2 each. Apparently yesterday the cart was at 40th and Park and according to Facebook they had such an awesome day, that they’ll be back in that spot again today until 7pm. As with all mobile food, check before you go via Facebook page or twitter @monsieursingh.

Havana Central Launches Empanada Cart: Village Voice reported the other day that the Cuban themed restaurant will be launching a cart selling their famous empanadas (with savory fillings like beef and chicken and sweet options like pineapple, coconut, and guava/cheese) for $1 on Tuesdays between 4-7pm. But this deal has been available for years inside the restaurant! Start offering these at lunchtime and then we'll talk...

Sunrise Mart Bento Boxes Aren’t Bad for the Price

A few weeks ago, I noticed a coworker eating a lovely-looking Japanese style Katsu pork curry at his desk. I thought he might have gone to one of my favorites, Go! Go! Curry, but it’s a bit of a jaunt from our office. He had gotten it at “one of those Japanese places” across from the NY Public Library. Cafe Zaiya and Yagura have been around forever, but Sunrise Mart (41st btw. 5th + Madison) was most intriguing to me so I made a note to come back.

Antojitos Mexicanos Cart Brings Queens to Midtown

While we have some great food carts in Midtown, some may argue that the best street food in New York is along Roosevelt Avenue in Queens – especially when it comes to Indian, Latin American, and Mexican food. Last week Lunch’er David R wrote in with a tip about a new Mexican cart on 39th and Park that is serving the authentic stuff you usually only find out in Jackson Heights.
