PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Sydney”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Sydney, a receptionist who hates “health food” but is looking for a salad recommendation…

Name: Sydney

Age: 21

Occupation: Receptionist and Blogger

Where in Midtown do you Work?: Rockefeller Center

Favorite Kind of Food: Authentic Mexican food (I grew up in Arizona)

Least Favorite Kind of Food: “Health food”, i.e. energy bars, protein shakes, etc.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Tacos de Cabeza & Tacos Hongos from Toloache (on 50th btw. B’way+8th), Spicy Tuna Roll and Amberjack sashimi from Hatsuhana (on 48th btw. Mad+5th), and Drunken Noodles from Little Thai Kitchen (on 53rd btw. 2+3rd)

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Blue Dog Cafe (on 56th btw. 6+7th); they have amazing sandwiches, my favorite being the Ricotta, Fig, and Honey on 7-Grain Bread. They also have fantastic coffee! The dirty iced chai latte that they make is to die for.

Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? All of the tasty food trucks! I also found out about the delicious veggie sandwiches from Katchkie Farms at the Rockefeller Center Farmer’s Market.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Union Square in the summer, just so I can have access to a farmer’s market whenever I want! Either that or Montreal so I can have poutine for lunch…it’s probably for the best that I don’t live there!

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? Where is the most fresh tasting salad in Midtown? I’m sick of soggy salads!

Got a recommendation for Sydney? Put it in the comments. And as always if you want to be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email editor@midtownlunch.com.

  • we can take a cue from Philly and have Zach charge $300 to profile a blogger, lol

    • Jamie gets 300 bucks from each of her profilees?

      Way to go Jamie!!!!!!!

Slip me fifty of that and I dont tell Zach :-)

      • lordieee no… he is referring to how bloggers are up in arms upon hearing that a low-trafficked blog was charged a fee and a story ran about a Philly “blog tax”. This is not the case, it was a one time business fee.

My broke ass is not banking $300 a week on my profiled lunchers.

Fred, do you want to contribute to my loan repayment fund??

      • I will talk to Mr Slate to see if he can toss a few extra clams into my pay. Knowing Mr Slate, though, its more likely Barney Rubble will discover the cure to dipsy-doodilitis

  • P.S> Very cool blog–interesting, not-too-fancy recipes. I’m more into this stuff than the endless food-blogs-full-of-edible-porn stuff. And with a Trader Joe’s at the end of my block, I’m primed to try new recipes on a whim!

  • You get paid to eat well ANDDD paid to work… Don’t quit your day job, literally haha.

Also another problem, the picture, shouldn’t you have chosen the page before you got your hands dirty in the bowl, plan ahead. haha i am such a loser

  • Sydney,

That makes sense. Thanks for ‘splaining.

Perhaps you should have requested a salad joint that delivers, though, as many do not.

My reaction is largely because I constantly see my colleagues smonching on $10 salads, but then bitching about how “money is a struggle”. Most folks are not lucky enough to have lunch purchased for them every day, like you. :-)

In your profile, you claim to eat at “All of the tasty food trucks!” How do you do that? Food trucks don’t deliver. They also don’t give receipts, so not sure how you are getting reimbursed for that lunch. Hmmm.

Also, you mention you discoverd the Rock Plaza Farmer Market “delicious veggie sandwiches from Katchkie Farms at the Rockefeller Center Farmer’s Market.”. Hmm. So you can get a sandwich there, but can’t buy lettuce and veggies and make your own fresh organic salad? ?? ??

The only reason I mention making your own salads is because on your blog you say you visit the Farmer’s Market “almost every day after work”. I was only mentioning it as an option for you to make your own organic, locally grown, inexpensive salad. But hey, if you want to get your boss to buy you a $10 salad, try the other suggestions in the comments.

Also, you are pretty lucky. I never heard of a receptionist who gets lunch paid for and delivered for them every day. That is fantastic!!

Thanks for passing on the link for your blog, though. I enjoy it. Keep up the good work.

I don’t check out the food trucks for lunch, I try to find them on my own time, usually on the weekends since I go straight home after work. I’ve made plenty of salads on my own, believe me. I’m going home and making one tonight! I was just wanting to know where I could purchase one in Midtown. I agree that I am really lucky; it’s fantastic! I’m really thankful for my job.

    Sydney,
Checked out your blog. Great photography, simple recipes, nice job! And I like the cute, nerdy girl look (I mean this in a good way). I’ll definitely try a few of your recipes. Of the several recipes I checked out, I noticed your waffle recipe is very close to a pancake recipe, which (for me anyway) results in soggy waffles. For crispy waffles, I’ve found substituting veg oil for butter and 1/2 cup corn starch for the same amount of flour does the trick. I know it doesn’t sound as appetizing, but the end product is spot on. My only salad go-to near Rock Center is Europa Cafe. If you don’t want mush, just ask them not to chop it.
    Cheers!

Oops! I meant 1/4 cup corn starch. I also use just one egg / separate, then fold the beaten egg white into the finished batter. End product is a crispy waffle with a light fluffly interior. Okay. Enough. back to Midtown Lunch…
