It’s True… I’m Moving to Los Angeles

So I wanted to let you guys know that the rumors are true. I am moving to Los Angeles at the end of the month. But don’t worry, Midtown Lunch as you know it isn’t going anywhere. Much more on that once everything is finalized… but the more pertinent news is that we’ll be expanding to cover Downtown and Philadelphia full time at the end of this week (with one familiar face.) And, in a move that should surprise nobody, starting next month I’ll begin eating my way through the amazing Los Angeles lunch and street food scene for your viewing pleasure. (Although I will say here and now, even in L.A., the no salad rule still stands!)

More on all of these new developments coming soon…

  • Need writers? heh

  • Dude!! Before you become too “Hollywood” for us tiny fads who stood by your generic deli rants from the early years, why don’t you share one last hooray with us… pick a spot (a recommend a big spot) and lets ALL have lunch.. plus a chance to really wish you well and show some true thanks for how you made our work days in midtown a bit more… delicious. :> Mamacita, you’re the de facto social chair of this site.. get a proper send-of put together for Zach (umm, not sure his wife will be please with Rick’s Caberet, so cross that one off your list ;P ) This site’s NY portion better not fizzle without you.. otherwise i might head out to LA too (mmmm.. Carls Jr. Double Western Bacon Cheese Burger…mmmmm)

I always thought that this site should be franchised somehow, but I assumed that Zach would continue to helm the flagship.

To completely serious, Zach, I hope that the LA, Philly, and NYC posts will go on separate blogs. There are two big reasons why this blog is great: (1) it has a narrow focus that is of interest to a wide audience, and (2) it has Zach. I’m not exaggerating when I say that if my MidtownLunch RSS feed starts sending me stories about LA, I will drop it like a bad habit.

Less seriously, can be have an American Idol-style contest to see who gets to be your replacement?

  • @ Dan L. – I actually considered doing that, but I’m leaving too soon to pull it off. Didn’t expect to leave Midtown in the midst of this expansion, but my wife got a kick ass job… so there it is.

And don’t worry, every city will have its own part of the site. So if you just want to look at stuff in Midtown, the site won’t change at all from what it is right now. There will just be extra sections that you can feel free to ignore. (You’ll see at the end of the week when we launch Downtown & Philly)

  • That frickin’ does it. I am cancelling my application for residency in Midtown, New Yawk City

Maybe I’ll apply to Atlanta, Gawga, for residency, so I can be closer to you-know-who.

    Good luck, Zach.

  • My reaction. Me = Garth, Zach = Ron Burgundy, Lunch’ers = San Diegans

For real though, the first thing I did on my first day of work in midtown (October 2008) was Google “midtown lunch NYC” and your blog was the first entry. I’ve been hooked ever since and would have been lost without it. So thanks for everything and best of luck!!

  • Hey Zach, make sure you check out Koreatown in LA. Tons of places to try and dirt cheap.

I’ll try to keep up the good work here at http://newyorkstreetfood.com/
but you were definitely a trailblazer.

  • So has the boob job and blonde hair come yet, or do you have to wait to actually reside in LA for that to happen.

Your first mission has to be the bacon wrapped hotdogs sold from makeshift grills

That’s great news for us left coasters, Zach! Hope to run into you at Phillipes (http://www.philippes.com/) one of these days ;-)

  • Look, the LA people are kissing up already. I feel like I’ve been in a car crash. We’ve lost our guy in the street who wrote brilliantly about things we could see, feel and most importantly eat in real time.

  • WOW great news for your wife on the new job but sad news for all of us here, I am so depressed that I will break my cardinal of rule never using emoticons to type the following.

    :(

I suppose we should have seen this coming. NYC just couldn’t satisfy your insatiable Asian fix. Best wishes on the Left Coast!

  • Wow, bittersweet news, but congratulations, Zach.

My gut and man-boobs salute you, and wish you the best in your new endeavors.

Seriously, though: thank you for your dedication to Midtown Lunch over the years. You’ve created an invaluable resource and rallied together a community of true-believers, and proven that it is possible to eat with dignity and gusto in NYC without breaking the bank.

On a personal level, ML has repeatedly restored my faith in this otherwise hostile/lame series of zipcodes, and made working here just a little more tolerable. So thanks for that.

    All the best.

I second the idea for a large “goodbye” lunch. Who’s organizing?

  • Adam. He’s known for his ‘big bucks’, according to ‘FRED’ — LOL!

  • Zach! My heart hurts thinking of NYC blog world without you in it. Thanks for looking out for us Monday through Friday, rain or shine. LA is lucky to have you and I CAN’T WAIT to see what’s next. HUG!

  • Dang, you’re going Hollywood? Can I come?

  • booo, You’ll be missed! Who’s going to run the Street Meat palooza now?!

  • Oh… I’ll be coming back for SMP! :-)
