At Lunch Now: Birthday Splurge at Anthos

photo.jpg

So it’s my birthday today, but I am forgoing my annual “go to a by the pound chinese buffet and eat with reckless abandon” birthday meal to have a fancy pants lunch with the wife (and baby).  I suppose once a year it’s ok to spend a little more than $10 on lunch… especially if it’s at Anthos.  (Awwww yeah lamb burger!) I feel a little bad being here with the baby in the stroller, but he’s being pretty well behaved.  Too bad the lady next to us doesn’t think so. I apologized, and felt really bad until I watched her scrape the beautifully seared crispy brown crust off top of her fish, and only eat the inside.  There should be a freakin’ law.  You know what lady… eating lunch next to my kid’s stroller didn’t ruin your lunch, you ruined your lunch!

Ah… whatever. Your birthday is just once a year! What are you gonna do…

  • Happy birthday!

  • I wonder if one can get the lamb burger with cheese….

  • that lady can suck it. happy birfday!!!

  • Any other lamb burger recommendations?

  • Anthos is grossly overrated, chef Psilakis takes traditional Greek ingredients and makes his dishes intensely overcomplicated. The lamb burger is delicious, but it’s hard to screw up a lamb burger made with such high-quality meat. The rest of the menu just has too much going on (the smoked octopus which tastes of nothing but smoke). For a REALLY good (although expensive) Greek meal, all you have to do is wander a few blocks from Anthos to Milos on 55th. Talk about Greek food at its best, and Happy Birthday Zach.

  • Happy birthday! Your baby didn’t ruin our lunch – he was actually quite well behaved (and I love babies – even crying babies). It was the constant back and forth stroller motion in the tight quar-ters that was what made us wonder why we the hostess had seated us next to you when there were several other seats – not your fault and I’m sorry if we detracted from your lunch. And I will eat my fish how I like it..

  • Eat the damn fish skin!! Jesus, do you take off the skin from fried chicken?? That’s the most flavorful part.

Anyways, peace and love foodies. Have a great weekend everyone!

  • @Anthos Diner – OMG! I can’t believe you read Midtown Lunch. That’s embarassing…

I did feel really bad about the baby thing, and you didn’t detract from our lunch at all.

Were were just really jealous, because your fish looked amazing- and we wished that we had ordered it… and I just couldn’t believe you didn’t eat the crust :-)

  • HAHAHAHAHA … I’m sorry but is that really the person who was there?! That is SO funny! I’m curious how you knew / why you thought she was annoyed though (did she sigh a lot and stare at the baby with angry eyes?). Hahahaha… sorry, when this happens to me, I get really embarrassed so I think I have an idea of what you’re feeling. Haha. I hope you enjoyed your lovely lunch and whatever dinner you have tonight as well :)

  • Happy bday Zach! Great choice for a good bday lunch. You may have inspired me to do the same… I went there once when I worked nearby and the burger was absolutely amazing. If only they did a $10 take out option… if only…

  • Zach, you’re getting too popular I guess. Gotta watch out who you’re calling out on your blog.

For the record – that was the most awesome post I’ve seen on this site yet.

  • Relax, Zach. “Anthos Diner” is really the good doctor. Lucky he didn’t tell you about his wife.

  • Belated happy birthday, Zach… and may you have many, many more.

  • Late to the party, but hope you had a very Happy Birthday, Zach!!

  • Happy B-Day thanks for making my lunch.

  • Anthos Diner was definitely the person sitting next to us… I know because we were doing what she said with the stroller.

  • Happy (belated) birthday, Zach. But I must protest. A lamb “burger” ≠ a burger.

  • My bday was one day after yours, but for mine I went to Dim Sum @ the Golden Unicorn and then had fondue @ Divalicious Chocolate. =3 A good way to make those dollars go a long way.

Though…maybe one day I will try that lamb burger… I’ll do it in celebration of someone else’s bday.

  • Hungry,
Have you been to Jing Fong for Dim Sum? If so, how would you compare the food?
