PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Liz”

Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Liz, a great golfer (I’m guessing) who loves barbecue nachos. (Nice.)

Name: Liz

Age: 30

Occupation: Advertising Assistant/Freelance Writer

Where in Midtown do you Work?: 45th & Lex.

Favorite Kind of Food: Cheese, Burritos, Ice cream

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Sushi (sorry! I’ll turn in my New York City resident card now)

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: The Roast Turkey Sandwich from ‘wichcraft makes me not afraid of turkey sandwiches anymore (too much bad deli turkey can make a person fear it), Pampano Taqueria (on 3rd Ave. btw. 49+51st) pescado, vegetarian or alambre burritos with tons of their tomatillo green salsa. Curried corn chowder from Dishes (Multiple Locations). If I’m really feeling sad and deserving, a mini chocolate cake from the Little Pie Co. in Grand Central. Virgils BBQ (on 44th btw. 6+7th) in Times Square – any kind of pulled meat from them, or their barbecue nachos will do. Chopped salad from Josie’s (on 3rd Ave. & 37th St.) Any burger or sub from Jackson Hole (3rd Ave. & 35th St.) because they’re smothered in melted cheese. Grilled cheese for breakfast for lunch at the Comfort Diner (45th & 3rd). Tomato Cheddar soup from Hale & Hearty contains addictive chemicals, I’m convinced. And it should be said that I am 100% devoted to Oren’s Coffee in Grand Central any time of day. Best coffee and nicest staff, hands down.

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Naples 45 (on 45th btw. Mad+Park) and Chipotle for convenience. Chipotle guacamole is decent for chain food, what can I say? There’s a Metro Sandwich shop in my building too and I have to admit that a giant tortellini pasta bowl with mozzarella mixed in makes great hangover food. Again, I’m answering this question based on convenience, my go-to’s are such because I don’t have to walk far.

Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? Naples’ post-2pm discounted slices. They are not old slices! They are hot and fresh! It’s heaven. I also discovered their pasta fagioli soup too which is great.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? San Francisco inside the Ferry Market Terminal. Specifically inside the Cowgirl Creamery or Pancho Villa Tacos right outside the terminal.

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? What sandwich/burger joint has the best pickles?

Pickle fan, eh? I’m a half sour man myself, so if anybody has any recs for those, I’ll take it. Anybody got anything? Post your suggestions in the comments. And as always, if you want to be the next Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er, or you’d like to nominate somebody in your office email me at zach@midtownlunch.com.

  • “w/ Wiz, onions…” is redundant.

  • now you know that no one likes a cheesesteak poser, stevie …

  • Cheesesteak, like Haggis, are serious things

  • I like the half sours at Ben’s on 37th west of 7th.

  • Ben’s is on 38th – and the full-sours & tomatoes rock too

  • @liz, sorry forgot the pickle suggestion , Juniors, but only when someone else is picking up the check.

    @stevenp , stan and wayne

I agree “wit onions” is redundant but BEWARE.

Even at what some regard to be the center of the cheesesteak universe, Pat’s Steaks, 8th and Passyunk in Philly, I had the privilege of ordering very clearly and soberly “a provolone, ‘WIT, and mushrooms” and merely got a provolone cheesesteak with mushrooms. Rather than ask for onions and incur the wrath of drunk and hungry Navy middies and West Point Cadets behind me on line for slowing down the line, I clammed up and scurried off with my onion-less sandwich to the condiment station, hoping that an endless supply of hot cherry peppers could replace the lack of friend of onions but all I got was gas.

  • ‘wichcraft? Virgils? Hale and Hearty? Chipotle?

    Pickles?

Good thing you have an excuse (no ice cream?)

    When’s the big day?

  • I like to believe she is beating up last week’s profile entry. Overall very good profile. :)

  • the pickles at amish market are yummy…actually there isn’t a bad thing in that place!

  • The pickles from Mendy’s in Grand Central food court are good. They might even throw in an extra one for free if you ask nicely.
