Brick Lane Curry House & Good Health Burger Join the Midtown Lunch Fray

A lot of action lately on 53rd Street btw. 2+3rd Avenue, a small “out of bounds” block that I’ve covered a little bit in the past. Spoons, the tiny Korean/American take out deli closed up awhile back, and a second location of the East Village’s Brick Lane Curry house has opened in its place. The Hungry Commuter gets the first taste and reports that “the phaal isn’t as hot as the original. But give them some time. They just opened…” I’ve never been to the original Brick Lane Curry House in the East Village, which nobody will argue serves some of the hottest curry in NYC. Whether or not it actually tastes good, is a whole different argument.

But wait. There’s more…

Good Health Burger

Lunch’er Anastasia casually mentioned the newly opened Good Health Burger in her profile last week, but sends along this extra info:

Good Health Burger is amazing vegetarian (and some non-vegetarian) food, that even my carnivore husband said was fantastic. Most of the options are under $10, and the burgers are large and come with warm tortilla chips and salsa. I recommend the Black Bean Bacon Burger. I know it’s vegan, but it’s SO good. I hate giving up this gem of a secret, but I want them to stay in business and I want the MidtownLunch readers to taste the magic. Oh, and the dairy- and egg-free desserts are out of this world.

Good to know… for vegetarians. Good any news or tips to share? Feel free to send them to

  • Q: What do you call a vegan with diarrhea?

    A: A salad shooter.

  • Chucky, it’s a plastic spoon or fork.I understand you’re not allowed such impliments incase you self harm yourself or tingtong, but please don’t be such a fuckwit.

  • You need not reveal your staggering inadequacies here in public, Mr. McBagel.

  • Looks like the mysterious device sticking out of the curry is…. a fork.

Somewhat perplexed by the vegan comments… they eat what they wish, so whould you. If they want it to taste like meat so be it… they get the taste they desire without violating their ethical principles and the vegetarian life is generally more ecologically sound. I am an onmivore BTW

  • Wait…… verpes? Come again?

On second thought, don’t there are enough asshats on this planet.

  • Once again here’s another example of trying to box people into your own specific definition of vegetarianism, where all vegetarians should only like plain vegetables and nothing else. Again, people make these choices for many different reasons. For example, I became semi-vegetarian myself for health reasons. Doesn’t mean I don’t like meat or the taste of it. I do appreciate the variety and options out there for people like me. I’m very excited about the Good Health Burger place that is posted here. I love veggie burgers as I think they taste great. I’m sure your beef burgers are good too and I am not stopping you or making fun of you for eating it. So what’s the deal?

  • I don’t understand the vegan haters at all. Not just on here, but in real life too. Why do so many of this post’s commenters sound so *threatened* and defensive? Do y’all know a ton of snobby offensive vegans? I only know one vegan and she is very nice and has never made me feel bad for eating my lardcakes.

Also, Anastasia, thank you for the tip and please keep them coming. Sometimes I eat vegetables too.

  • Testy, testy, I think you guys all need some free hot dogs and beer.

Eh, if a vegan wants to eat a faux burger, so be it. I’ll eat one too just to even out the score in my arteries. Can we turn our attention to the egg- and milk-free desserts? Can someone, Anastasia, elaborate on what that would be? Chocolate? Just chocolate? Butter? Is there any butter in this place?

  • Needs butter, ohhh yes……..Butter….hmmm.

  • I need hot dogs, beer, AND butter. Though not necessarily all at the same time.

  • The Brits would put butter on the bun of their hot dogs…
    and black puddin

  • As Marlon Brando said, “Bring the buttah”

  • did someone say dogs and butter? hmm…

  • I have had amazing Vegan desserts. Often Peanut butter/Chocolate concoctions.

  • No dogs….. breakfast sausage sliced lengthwise, dijon and whipped butter (on the sausage so it melts and oozes) on light toast…. things that make you go yummmm.

  • Man I just want to know what kind of fake bacon they have. Also, slightly unrelated I can’t come to happy hour tonight b/c I have to go to the stupid gym after work b/c I didn’t get up and run this morning b/c I was up too late drunk last night. Sigh. Sorry kids. Get some popcorn for me….

  • I like tempeh, but to call it bacon is an insult to both tempeh and bacon.

  • Sarah,

Do they still have popcorn at Rudy’s? I didn’t see any the last time I was there.

  • I am definitley eating a monkey, a toucan and a Koala Bear! all this Vegan talk is making me hungry for meat!!!!

  • I shall sip a nice muscat @ 10.30 gmt… join in from afar.
