Lunching in Montreal

Happy New Year, darlings! I ran away to Montreal for a bit (my first time) for a largely food based escape that I would love to share with you.  I followed Midtown Lunch founder Zach’s guide as much as possible. Who else would I trust more?

Duck Poutine at Suppa

Suppa in Norther Liberties focuses on indulgent, American food all day. With a “Chopped” win under their chef’s belt, you have to trust the menu, which includes a smoked and pressed duck sandwich, fried chicken, and even some vegetarian dishes.

Fried Chicken and Gravy Fries from Philly Fry

A french fry truck better have some good toppings! That was the mind set I had while checking out newcomer Philly Fry, a truck that opened this winter. When I saw all the proteins and guilty-pleasure combos, I realized they knew that was expected of them. From buffalo chicken and crab meat to bacon and steak- your order will provide more than just something to dip into ketchup.

The Flavor of Pork? Latin Flavor brings Casual Caribbean to South Street

At the end of November, a Latin American/Caribbean casual dining restaurant opened on South Street. Latin Flavor serves Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Dominican food. This news peaked my taste bud’s interests because most Caribbean restaurants we have to work with in Philly are either fancy or super far from Center City.  I wondered if this spot could stand up to the amazing Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Dominican food I have tried up in North Philly: Isla Nena, El Principe, El Lechonera Principe, Cibao, El Rey de Fritura, Shining Star, Porky’s Point, and Freddy and Tony’s. Looking back at those reviews, I can only grimace with pride about how much fatty pork I have already consumed in my lifetime. Time for more. Because we all know that the “Latin Flavor” is often fatty, delicious pork.

Stuffed with Burgers and Mushroom Patties at Good Stuff Eatery

Spike Mendelsohn’s DC burger chain opened in Philly last week. I don’t know many places whose decor sense can be described as “cocky,” but this is definitely one of them. Besides the narcissistic tshirts and wall art, the next thing I noticed was the confusion around the register. We were not sure where to go to order our food at first. I can say that our food was ready quickly, signaled by out vibrating buzzer a la Shake Shack. It is hard not to compare everything Good Stuff does to Shake Shack since they are very similar in what they offer and how they offer it.

It’s Way Too Cold, Call in Sick and Warm Up with a Long Lunch at Amy’s Omelette House

Though I love Wegman’s and the shore, I am not normally a Jersey advocate, especially not for a lunch excursion- no offense to anyone, I just always get lost and confused in the state of New Jersey. But, I am here to sing a different tune after my meal at Amy’s Omlette House, a sort of mega diner.  There are 3 locations, all in NJ, the one I visited is in Cherry Hill.

The fact that I was transported to Amy’s in a car with butt warming capabilities helped ease me in to the idea of Jersey dining.  And then I saw the menu; it’s many many pages long with over 200 types of omelettes plus a completely separate menu for ice cream. And our waiter was an adorable awkward college boy home for winter break. These factors helped me forget what state I was in.

A Meaty Moldivian Meal in North EAST Philly

Not to be a brat, but it is not often that I come across a cuisine that I am completely unfamiliar with. So while browsing for restaurants in NE Philly (one of my favorite hobbies), I was excited to find there exists a restaurant that serves traditional Moldivian food. For the sake of being practical and straight forward, it’s called Moldova Restaurant. Inside, the decor is festively kitschy.  Service came with a smile, though our waiter did not speak enough English to recommend any dishes for us. We were on our own.
