Jamaican Dutchy Hopes to Be Back Soon With Jamaica Dogs

I spoke with O’neill, the owner of the Jamaican Dutchy, yesterday and he filled me in on how a 3 week vacation has turned into 6 weeks. Apparently his permit is up for renewal, and the final meeting is on Thursday. If all goes well, he hopes to reopen a week from Monday. He also let me know that he’s got plans for some crazy specials every Tuesday. The first one will be a Jamaican beef stew topped hot dog (a Jamaican chili dog if you will.) Nice. I think I speak for everyone when I say: “Can’t wait to have you back.”

Dishes Gets the DOH?: For those who thought the Grand Central Terminal Food Court was immune to the Department of Health... "I wasn't there, but I heard DOH shut down Dishes in Grand Central this morning. Supposedly, the employees were standing around looking shocked while the inspector was carrying out his inspection."

I Don’t Know Who Carla Marie Is, But She Looks Damn Tasty

Half Off Chocolate Alert: Speaking of Groupon, todays deal is a pretty good one. $15 for $30 worth of chocolate from 5th Ave. Chocolatiere (which ironically is located on 3rd Ave. and 43rd St.) Just remember you can only access the coupon until the end of today.

Sushi Cake is My New Favorite Thing at Oms/b

It’s been forever and a day since I’ve been to oms/b, the quaint Japanese rice ball shop on 45th btw. Lex+3rd.  But last week I finally made it back to redeem the $12 gift certificate I bought for $6 from Groupon back in September (what do you want, I’m slow!)  Oms/b is not for everybody, and I fully admit that it is tough to fill up for $10 at this place.  But there is something incredibly fun about their myriad of omusubi options, and this trip was no different.  I couldn’t resist my goto fave, the shrimp tempura with green tea salt… but I also tried two things I had never seen before.

Check them out after the jump…

Lunch’er “Jon” Reports: Ocha vs. Aoki

Ocha vs. Aoki

I’m constantly on the lookout for good sushi deals, which to me consists of three rolls for $10 (the ML price limit.) Aoki, on 48th btw. 7+8th, has always been my go-to spot, even though they raised the price to $11. The last time I posted about it, Lunch’er “nycfoodie” mentioned that he was a bigger fan of Ocha (on 46th btw. 8+9th). Well, Lunch’er “Jon” took that as a challenge, and hit up both places on the same day. Here is his report:

Once in a great while, a battle wages between two restaurants for supremacy of a combo. On this day, I hoped to crown a champion. After reading up on the Aoki three roll combo, then hearing that Ocha’s was better from someone else, I took my large appetite, my pre-work hour, and my notepad to hit both Ocha and Aoki back-to-back to hopefully settle the qualms on ML. First up, Ocha.

Papa Perrone Returns Today: It's been a week since a fire broke out on the Papa Perrone truck... but we're hearing everything has been fixed, and the big papa himself (J.P.) has been cleared to return to work today.  Glad to have him back...

“Modern” Korean Hits Midtown North

DSC05610

I like Pro Hot Korean (on 56th btw. 5+6th), but I was still pretty excited to hear in the forums that a new Korean place had opened on the same block. It’s called “Chom Chom”, but sadly it’s “modern” Korean food (which is code for “expensive”).  Even the lunch specials are all $14 and up.  You can splurge if you want… but I’ll probably just stick to my old dolsot bi bim bap standby.  (Unless, of course, they start offering a $10 lunch special!)

For the Freeloaders: If you're reading ML, you must be a cheapo at some level... in which case you should enjoy this Frugal Traveler's guide to cheap stuff in New York. In addition to linking to us, it also mentions Profiled Midtown Lunch'ers Wined and Dined & The Skint.
