Mamacita’s Holiday Happy Hour Party list

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so every week our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

Yeah, there you are… sitting in your cubical, waiting for the open bar at the holiday party, wishing the canapés are not Costco brand mini quiches and the weird guy from accounting doesn’t corner you into a conversation about how no one properly fills out their reimbursement forms, leaving you thinking, “Good lord, my life is an episode of The Office.” Luckily for you I’m here to help keep your holidays on ice with these local bars to hold your holiday party at or to unwind after hours with your coworkers.

Columbus Circle Holiday Market Might Be the Best Lunch in Town Right Now

Columbus Circle Market

I generally don’t get excited when a major establishment sends me a glossy press release about an upcoming special event. The ersatz nature of the Columbus Circle pop-up Holiday market smacks at my general preference for hole-in-the-wall places and secret spaces, whether they be in Midtown, the Village or Brooklyn. So I was more than excited to see some of my far flung favorites make an appearance, like Crif Dogs, Fatty Crab, and Pies n Thighs among others. Lingering questions remained though – would the quality of food be as good as the original? And is it possible to construct a $10 Midtown lunch in one of the most opulent areas of the city, right on the doorsteps of the house of Per Se?

The answer is Yes and Yes.

Taim Mobile to Attempt Midtown Today!: Falafel lovers rejoice... Taim Mobile is coming to our hood today. As of now they're saying 47th btw. Park+Lex around 11:30am, but as you know things can change pretty quickly here in Midtown. Follow them on Twitter or the ML Twitter Tracker to be sure. And if you want a look at what the truck will be selling, Andrea posted a first look on the Downtown site.

Flatiron Lunch Follow Up: Focaccia is the Best Deal at Eataly

Every Friday our man UltraClay goes south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Eataly (on 5th Ave. and 23rd St.) has been a favorite of mine since it opened, but much more for groceries or a glass of wine than for lunch. Of all the different dining options, I’ve mostly only tried out the pizza and pasta than anything else. Let’s face it, there’s not a ton that makes it a Midtown Lunch. Still, there’s some great food here and over the weeks I’ve discovered a few really good options that fit into the ML budget and are worth seeking out.

Looking For Latkes?: Man, Chanukah snuck up on us this year! Looking for a potato pancake fix? Our recommendations from a few years ago still stand up, although sadly the Diamond Dairy is no more. There's also 2nd Ave. Deli and that potato pancake sandwich from Junior's.

Dean & Deluca at Rock Center Carrying Pumpkin and Cranberry Doughnut Plant Doughnuts

dean and deluca
Dean and Deluca may have downgraded their Rock Center presence, but the location on 48th btw. 5+6th is still a reliable outlet for Doughnut Plant doughnuts. Yesterday, I noticed that they were carrying two seasonal offerings that I’ve never had before: Pumpkin and Cranberry. Naturally, I had to give them both a try, for the good of the ML community, of course.

December Custard Calendar is Very XMas-ey: A new month means a new line up of custard flavors at the Shake Shack (on 8th Ave. and 44th). There's Candy Cane Crunch (Fri), Gingerbread (Sat), Spiced Apple Cider (Sun), Eggnog (Mon), Figgy Pudding (Tues), Panettone (Weds), and today’s flavor: Chocolate Orange Chestnut Swirl. The Gingerbread custard is quite good, too bad it's only on Saturdays. Bah humbug.
