Food Court Pump Closes

Is this too much Pump for one day? Or is it good to get it out of our system and never speak of it again? The Pump location in the food court on 3rd Ave. btw. 49+50th (with Sophie’s, Pampano, & the new Urban Lobster Shack) has closed. Makes sense now that they have their crazy new Chipotle-like location on 52nd btw. Lex+3rd.

Diamond District Loses Decades Old Hidden Gem

DSC05503

Last week we got some terrible news from the Diamond District, the strip of jewelry shops on 47th btw. 5+6th known for their hidden lunch options.  The Diamond Dairy, a kosher luncheonette hidden in the back mezzanine of the jewelry exchange on 4 W. 47th Street has closed. Along with Taam Tov, the almost 60 year old diner is one of the most well known of the hidden gems in the diamond district, and it will be missed.  Even as I stood at the bottom of the now closed staircase leading up to the place, a number of confused customers looking for lunch were turned away in disappointment.  No word on exactly why they closed, but according to one of the jewelers it came out of nowhere (and they are definitely gone for good.)  With Chanukah just a few days away, this is an especially big blow.  Where am I going to go for potato pancakes this year?

Auntie Anne’s Fail; Gulluoglu Having “Issues”

It appears as if the Rock Center Cinnabon has claimed its first victim.  Blondie and Brownie is reporting that the Auntie Anne’s in the Rock Center concourse has closed. Thankfully we still have the other four Midtown locations to fall back on for our cinnamon topped, butter soaked pretzel needs.  Also in sad-pastry-news, Lunch’er “Owen” emailed in this morning to say that Gulluoglu, the amazing baklava haven on 52nd St. and 2nd Ave, is closed because of some sort of “sprinkler” issue. Might have to hit up the Turkish kiosk in Bryant Park as a temporary replacement until Gulluoglu reopens…

2 More Rock Center Chains Close Up Shop: From Lunch'er Nick: "The Sbarro underneath rock center has closed, windows blacked out. The one in the subway station, across from Cinnabon. Also, that Jamba Juice rip-off that was next to Ben & Jerry's is done too." (Cue the "Steam" song...)

Metro Marche Closed?: Lunch'er "Lesliepear" pointed out in the ML Forums yesterday that the windows have been papered over at Metro Marche, Cafe Metro's experiment in semi-fine dining in the Port Authority (on 8th Ave. and 41st.)  There is no official confirmation that they are closed, but the phone number on their website is disconnected- which is never a good thing. Update in the Comments: It's being replaced by a Heartland Brewery.

Norimaki to Close at the End of the Month

Norimaki, Midtown NYCGot some sad news for sushi fans in the inbox yesterday afternoon from Lunch’er Christina: “Went to Norimaki today, they have a sign up by the counter that says their last day is 8/28—they are closing.” Decent and cheap sushi is tough to find in Midtown, and Norimaki was one of the better options for that area. It will be missed.

Smorgashutter

Just got word that the Smorgaschef on 49th St. & 2nd Ave. has closed. It’s out of bounds and not really a Midtown Lunch (everything is over $10), but if you must partake there is another location on Park Ave. & 38th Street (where the old AQ Cafe used to be.) For my Swedish food fix I prefer the new location of AQ Kafe (on Broadway btw 57+58th), or FIKA Swedish Espresso Bar (on 58th btw. 5+6th), both with lunch options under $10.

Smorgaschef’s goodbye sign is after the jump…

BREAKING: City Burger to Become Schnitzel Shop?

city burger

This just in from Lunch’er Tigerbot:

“Just went to go to city burger (on 39th & Broadway) and found that it was out. Apparently the Schnitzel Glatt Kosher Express is moving in instead… Sad day!”

Called City Burger to confirm and their answering machine says “Closed For Renovations”, but when I called the Abitino’s (City Burger’s owner, on Broadway btw. 40+41st) the lady who answered the phone said that City Burger was sold. And with that, Midtown Lunch’s closest connection to Pat LaFreida is gone.

More on the situation as it comes in.

Kashmir Express Looks Closed For Good

DSC03545

Paying for Indian food by the pound always seemed like a losing proposition to me, so I wasn’t exactly surprised to see the gates down on Kashmir Express Friday (on 8th Ave. btw. 39+40th.) They were closed temporarily by the DOH last year, and last week’s closing could be temporary as well- but to me this looks a little more permanent. Thankfully the all you can eat Kashmir Buffet (in the basement of “The Cave” next door) is still open. I’m a fan of the food… just not paying what it weighs.

99 Miles to Philly is Closed: This just in thanks to lunch'er "ecoli":  The just out of bounds location of 99 Miles to Philly that opened on 2nd Ave. and 52nd Street has closed.  It looks like the original EV location is still open, which means that it's just this space that's cursed.  Zip Burger barely lasted two years in the same spot, and- I don't know if you know this but- hamburgers are really popular in NYC.
