Today is Oxtail Day at Sophie’s Cuban: Looking for a late lunch? Serious Eats New York recommends the oxtails at Sophie's Cuban, which are available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. At $11 it's just over the ML price limit, but like we've been saying for years, it's totally worth it.

Checking out the $1 Slice at Maffei’s Pizza Truck

1 Dollar Pizza Truck

Earlier this summer, I came across a $1 Slice Truck outside Maffei’s on 22nd street. I love me some $1 pizza, so I was psyched to find out that they were planning on parking in midtown with some frequency. (And especially excited after reading about Maffei’s Grandma’s slice in Jason’s Flatiron Lunch review.) It took awhile for my schedule to sync up with the pizza truck (ML twitter tracker stalking, anyone?) but I finally had a chance to check out the goods.

Chorrillana Now Available For Lunch!: Chilean food fans should be excited about this one... just found out via the ML Twitter Tracker that Barros Luco's version of Chorrillana (french fries topped with sauteed strips of steak, grilled onions, and scrambled eggs) which was previously only available during dinner, is now available for lunch. We've been waiting for this one for a while!

Snapshots: Ramen, Burgers & Bi Bim Bap

Need some inspiration for lunch today?  Here are some of the tastier looking photos that have been added to the Midtown Lunch Flickr Pool over the past few months…

Street Vendors Talk “Unwritten Rules” on Video

Following our coverage of last week’s spat between the Frites N Meats Truck and the Rickshaw Dumpling Truck the WSJ hit the streets of Midtown with a camera to interview a few food truck owners about the unwritten rules of street vending (aka you don’t park in another vendor’s spot).  The video is mostly worthwhile, although focusing on competition between trucks parked next to each other is a red herring. (There’s also something funny and ironic about hearing Vadim from FnM talk about an understanding that trucks came too in the past year and a half- as if these unwritten rules haven’t been used by vendors for decades.)

The real problem created by Rickshaw and Frites N Meats parking together on 48th is not one of competition.  It goes back to the original issue that we’ve been talking about forever… the fact that vending from a truck in Midtown is almost entirely illegal, and the more trucks that park in Midtown, the more attention they draw to themselves in high traffic areas (i.e. right in front of the Fox News Building) the more chance there will be of a crackdown.

The video makes it seem like the spot on 48th in front of Fox is *now* off limits.  The truth is, it was always off limits.  It is not legal to park on 48th btw. 6+7th, and trucks have been getting kicked out of that spot for years.  For whatever reason, the building finally decided to allow the one truck a day to park there, until that one truck turned into two.  And now the spot is done.   So, what’s the answer?  According to the video some of the new school trucks are forming some kind of organization to lobby the city on their behalf.   Check it out, after the jump…

See Midtown Street Vendors (And Zach!) on the Cooking Channel This Weekend: We're finding it difficult to keep track of all the craaaaazy food truck shows hitting the TV these days, but if you're going to watch one it should be Food Truck Revolution, this Sunday night on the Cooking Channel at 10pm EST. And we're not just saying that because Zach will be on it talking about Midtown street food. (Uh, ok... actually, that's exactly why we're saying it.)

Roll And Go Sushi Coming Soon

roll-and-go

Passed by this on 8th ave and 38th and thought I’d share this with y’all. It’s still in plywood but they finally put up the signage for Roll and Go, and there’s a sign on the window saying they’re hiring sushi chefs… sooooo I’m assuming this is referring to sushi rolls. Is this just going to be just another generic Midtown sushi place? Or could it possibly be something worthwhile? Will it be in the $10 ML price range? Only time will tell.

El Guayaquileño Cart Is Back!: Remember back in June the El Guayaquileño cart went MIA? Well, good news, they are back! Now parked on 37th and sixth Ave. on the northwest corner. Get a taste of Ecuadorian street food from Queens again in Midtown. Many thanks to Lunch'er "Wayne" for the hot tip!
