Rainy Days Make Me Seek Onion Soup

Speaking of French things, with all this on and off rain, I was in the mood for a comforting crock of French onion soup. Caribou Cafe looked pretty cute, and onion soup is the very first menu item. While I wouldn’t be able to avail myself of the outdoor seating in this rain, the interior works for a serene escape with music and typical French alcohol posters.  We took a window seat and were served bread and butter immediately.

April Means Philly Turns French

There are a lot of French things going on this month, have you been taking advantage of them?

Starting tomorrow, in honor of the Philly International Festival for the Arts, restaurants will be serving special menus created by duos of local and French chefs. [Uwishunu]

There will be a street fair on Broad St on April 30th with food vendors. I hope the sky is clear that day.

A pop up bistro is open in the Kimmel Center for Dinner and Sunday Brunch, also for PIFA.

What interests me more though is the French crepe cart in the Kimmel Center, I should probably check that out? Its open from 11-3 and  5-8.

Not to be left out, McGillin’s is putting on its beret with menu items like French Onion Soup, French Muffuletta, Beef Bourguignon, Moules Frites and Pizza Provencal, and of course  a French Martini to go with it all.

Have you enjoyed any of the PIFA events yet?

50% off Groupon for Crepes (Edited): Today you can pick up a $30 Groupon for $15 for food/drink at La Creperie, which has been tested and approved by Luncher Nick. [Edit. Just kidding about that last part, as Munchi Monster pointed out, this is for the Crepe spot in Center City, not the one that Nick tried in UCity. But wherever they are, crepes are great right?]

Campus Crepes for Everyone

Today, Nick from My Inner Fatty is sharing secrets of campus dining for the general public.

Campus dining?  Yes… I know, repressed memories of vegan ‘ribs’ are all flooding back. Luckily, it’s not always as bad as it sounds. Case in point… the crepe place at Penn. Hidden inside Houston Hall, located on Walnut just West of 34th, there exists a small place called “Pari La Petite Creperie.” It’s a magical corner shop that serves up a dizzying variety of thin crepes, stuffed with your choice of savory or decadent, expected toppings like Nutella and chocolate. It’s a place that most students here know well and hold dear to their hearts. The guy at the counter is about as friendly as they come, the prices are reasonable ($5-7), and the crepes are made fresh and fast. Despite the fact that they’re awesome at what they do, most people don’t know about this place. It’s about time that someone corrected this grave injustice. Penn students should share their secret with the public. It is open to everyone after all.

What is a Vietnamese Crepe?

There are so many restaurants on Washington Ave. I want to get to know them all. I want to know what each does best. Nam Phuong was on this list. The restaurant is large and busy. Its size and fun menu makes it accommodating for everyone- couples, friends, groups of drunks, groups of hangover cure seekers, coworkers… as long as you are a fan of soup and noodles.

Browsing the many pages of the menu, I was intrigued by the Vietnamese Crepe ($6.50) right on the first page under appetizers. I had never tried one before so I had to have it.

For Crepes that are Unique, head to the food truck called La Dominique

Today we are getting a report on an amazing food  truck on the Philly streets from Profiled Luncher Eileen.

Walking by Drexel’s Hagerty Library (33rd & Market), I finally got to stop at La Dominique, the crepes cart. Having heard a rave recommendation from a friend who claimed the owner handpicks only the freshest, best ingredients and created heavenly crepes, I was more than eager to give it a shot!

From the outside this looks like any Joe-Next-Door food cart that sells hot dogs, cheese steaks…you know, the usual. Look a little more closely and you’ll see a cute bistro-style menu describing savory lunch crepes and sweet treat dessert crepes. Even better, these are not your average crepe options…

Crepe Insanity: Ranch Covered Gyro and Pepperoni Crepe from a Truck

The Creperie is very popular among the undergrads over at Temple. Both sweet and savory crepes are made to order and tons of fillings are available. They tend to get pretty busy during lunch time, but the boys inside the truck work fast. You can make your own crepe or chose from the combos available. Most of the combos are relatively normal. But not the “Alexander the Crepe”.  This one is a special breed.
