At $2 it’s an economical choice and you’ll get one handed to you in swift fashion with the only question whether you want it spicy or not.

FiDi Down To Two Ruben’s Empanadas

rubens closed sign

The Nassau St. location of Ruben’s Empanadas between John & Fulton St. was not only closed, but completely gutted when I walked by yesterday. It’s not entirely surprising since it seems to be mostly empty even during prime lunch time. Never fear, though: As the sign says there’s another location on Fulton St. and one on Pearl just off Hanover Sq. to feed your empanada cravings.

Basically Every Food Truck’s Downtown Today: Today's food truck lot options are Rickshaw, Milk Truck, Taim, Valducci's, Kelvin Slush and Mexico Blvd. at the Lent Space, and the WFC has Bongo Brothers, Rickshaw, Cupcake Crew, Eddie's Pizza and Phil's Steaks. The ML Downtown Twitter Tracker also has Palenque and Mike N Willie's at Wall & Front, Big D's Grub's at Old Slip & Water, Hibachi Heaven's at Water & Broad, Bistro Truck and Sweetery are at Hudson & King, Wafels & Dinges is at Canal & Broadway, Cinnamon Snail's at Wall & Water with some new menu items, Bob & Jo's at Water & Coenties Slip and Korilla's at Varick & Vandam.

Coolhaus’ Rain Date For Free Ice Cream Sandwiches Is Today!: There was a fair amount of excitement followed by a big let down last week when the Coolhaus truck planned to give away free ice cream sandwiches through a promo with the W Hotels, but ended up canceling due to the rain that would not stop. They're using today as a make up, and you can get the freebies from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the area of Broadway and Wall St. at Maiden Lane & Water St. They're going to tweet the exact location, and we'll try to post it here, so leave room at lunch for a late day treat.

First Look: Hibachi Heaven Is The Healthy Version Of Street Meat

As noted on the Midtown site, there’s something of a trend right now with trucks serving Japanese food. Hibachi Heaven debuted last Thursday in the Financial District and this Friday there’s a truck called Okadaman hitting the streets with okanamiyaki and other specialties more commonly found at sake watering holes in the East Village. But this review’s about Hibachi Heaven which serves the protein + vegetables + rice + sauce combo familiar to anyone who’s eaten at a street meat cart. This wasn’t street meat, but it wasn’t exactly Japanese either.
