PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Dan”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Dan who would likes a good banh mi but would shun your vegan chili.

Name: Dan Meltz

Occupation: Product development manager

Where you work: Broadway & Park Place

Age: As young as the mountains, as old as the wind

Favorite kinds of food: Steak, Chinese, Italian, brunch, barbeque

Least favorite foods: Any good food that’s been befouled and ruined with cilantro, cumin, licorice/anise/fennel or mushrooms. And vegan.

Favorite lunches downtown: L41 (aka, beef with crispy fried egg noodles) at Nha Trang (Multiple Locations), the buffet at Salaam Bombay on Greenwich (btw. Duane & Reade), the classic banh mi sandwiches at either Paris Sandwich (Multiple Locations) and Banh Mi Saigon Bakery on Grand (btw. Mulberry & Mott).

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Shake Shack. Way too often.

Places downtown you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: Downtown: None yet. Just learned about ML.

Dream job location, purely for lunch purposes, and why: The border of Chinatown and Little Italy. Two of my favorite cuisines.

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch: Downtown readers? Where can I get good Greek food without going to Queens?

The options are kind of limited downtown, but Pita Press on Cedar (btw. William & Pearl) is pretty solid, and they deliver. There was also the recent discovery of the Greek food at Suspenders on Broadway (nr. Thames). Who else has a good source of Greek food to recommend? And as always, if you would like to be next week’s Profiled Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email us at downtown@midtownlunch.com.

  • whatever happened to the Souvlaki GR truck? I have not seen them around in quite some time. There is also a small light blue stand on broadway near trinity church where she has various pastries, desserts and a greek panini which I have not tried yet. Looks pretty authentic.

  • I hope no one tells him that going to an Indian buffet….he’s probably has been consuming cilantro, cumin, licorice/anise/fennel in copious amounts without even knowing it.
