Okadaman Is Bringing Japanese Food To The Streets

If you’ve ever been to a Japanese bar, you’ve probably encountered some of the snacks that a new truck called Okadaman is going to be serving when it hits the streets in mid-June. The main draw is two kinds of okonomiyaki, or the pancakes that look like they’re moving when they’re not, but they’ll also have yakisoba and takoyaki. If you never thought you’d see the day that a truck served fried octopus balls, that day is about to arrive. Sneak a peek at the truck’s full menu after the jump.

PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Richard”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week we have Richard who works a little out of bounds, but really loves BonChon Chicken.

Name: Richard Chen

Occupation: Web developer

Where you work: Bleecker and Broadway

Age: 31

Favorite kinds of food: Asian! Specifically, Korean, because I can eat it all day and still not get fat or unhealthy.

Least favorite foods: Diner food. It’s very tasty but blasé on creativity, on the unhealthy side of things, high in oils and salts & also because they’re an N.J. invention, though their desserts are typically good.

Favorite lunches downtown: BonChon Chicken – I first heard about “Korean chicken” four years ago when a friend took me to its former location on Chambers St. Even though it was later spurned for being a fraud, I still loved the idea and now visit both its Leonia, N.J. location (closer to where I live) and the one on John St. Beware of imitators though, there are a few using similar signage. I usually get the six piece with bone and with soy and fresh garlic sauce; I subway down from wherever I am in the city for Bian Dang, especially if they’re in Soho, just to get this lovely food despite how they have a fixed location in the Food Gallery 32 in Midtown. I usually get the snack platter which, despite its name, is actually a full meal with an unpictured side of clear broth soup. (Favorite lunches continued after the jump!) Read more »

Black Burger Opens On Canal With Burgers, Calamari Fries & A Classy Slogan

There are now two cheap eats spots on a grimy stretch of Canal St., with a branch of $1 pizza spot Roll And Go and the recent addition of Black Burger right next to each other at the corner of West Broadway. Both places were clogged with high school students and because Black Burger is little more than a counter with a couple of stools for eating, it doesn’t take much for the line to stretch out the door. Inside, you’ll find a simple menu of either single or double hamburgers or cheeseburgers (fresh, never frozen!), fries and shakes with a grilled cheese and calamari fries thrown in for good measure. And beware the warning on the wall: “Once you go Black, you never go back.”

Bongo Brothers Launches A Summer Menu

Yesterday, Bongo Brothers Truck celebrated a year on the road with a raffle and also unveiled its summer menu. It’s a little bit simpler than the regular menu that included a frita and you can now get any of the meats in slider form for $3.50 which is half the price of the $7 sandwiches. This menu confirms that this truck is really for the carnivores, and now we can all get ready for swimsuit season with a Cubano. They’re also conveniently parked at Old Slip & Water today.
