PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Sam”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Sam who doesn’t have to go far for good pizza but still looking at different options.

 width=Name: Sam Rogers

Occupation: Program associate

Where you work: Lymphoma Research Foundation

Age: 29

Favorite Kinds of Food: French, Asian, Mediterranean, I’m really pretty easy.

Least Favorite Foods: Generic steam tables and salad bars.  Oh and risotto…I know that’s weird, but it’s true.

Favorite Lunches Downtown: Sam’s Falafel cart on Cedar (nr. Broadway).  I like Mexicue for pinto bean tacos when it is around.  I feel like a lot of people rip on Rickshaw Dumpling Truck but I dig it and get the duck dumplings when they have them.  I like Pearl St. Diner on Pearl (at Fletcher) for a good grilled cheese and old school diner vibe.  I like the cheese slice at Big Al’s on Thames (btw. Broadway & Trinity).  Urban Lobster Shack on Stone (btw. Broad & Broadway) is tasty if you can spend just over the Midtown Lunch limit.  Tandoor Palace on Fulton (btw. William & Gold) isn’t going to blow your mind but it is consistently pretty good, with a decent amount of spice. I usually get the lamb or goat special.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Pret

Places downtown you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: Tajin on Greenwich (btw. Edgar & Rector), Little Lad’s Basket on Broadway (btw. Cedar & Pine), Leo’s Bagels on Hanover Sq. (at Stone).  And of course all the carts.

Downtown Links (The “Have To Work On President’s Day? Eat Street Meat At Your Desk In Silent Protest” Edition)

Chinatown Fair, minus the world famous dancing and tic-tac-toe chickens, Mott Street, New York

This has nothing to do with lunch, but tic-tac-toe with chickens is awesome!  Courtesy of Eating in Translation.

  • You can find a rarity from Hanoi in Chinatown, but don’t expect mind-blowing quality. [Fork in the Road]
  • Breaking news: The spicy rizzak sandwich isn’t really spicy. [Food in Mouth]
  • There’s a bake shop opening in a Tribeca bar. Genius! [Tribeca Citizen]
  • A Chintown food court has four for $1 crab rangoon. [Grub St.]
  • Someone In Soho Got A Pizza From Eddie’s For Breakfast: You know what makes a great breakfast? Ordering a pepperoni pizza from Eddie's Pizza Truck at 8:40 a.m., which is what someone did at its Hudson St. parking spot this morning, according to the ML Downtown Twitter Tracker. In other news, Sweetery and Rickshaw are also on Hudson and Frites N Meats is on Water with a burger covered in cream gravy.

Get Half Off At Saluggi’s: There's a deal on Scoutmob today for 50% off at Saluggi's Pizzeria on Church St. (btw. Lispenard & Canal). You can only use one per table and it maxes out at $20, but it's a good deal since almost everything on the menu is normally out of ML price range.

Head Underground To Oriental Express Where Even Grilled Means Fried

I had one of those days recently where come lunchtime all I wanted to do was eat greasy food and get my recommended daily salt intake in one sitting. While I had many options to do that I opted to head over to Oriental Express on Cedar (btw. William & Pearl) to check out the buffet. I haven’t eaten at a by-the-pound buffet since New China Red in Tribeca scared me with its buffet sushi and communal soy sauce. I hadn’t quite committed to the buffet when I went down the stairs into the underground dining room, but it looked pretty good and at $5.95 a pound I wouldn’t be losing a whole lot of money if it did suck. No Mexicue For The FiDi: Due to a lack of parking it looks like Mexicue won't be in the FiDi today, but we do have a couple of other options on the ML Downtown Twitter Tracker. Sweetery is on Hudson and Rickshaw is on both Hudson and Hanover Square.

99% Vegetarian Food Cart Knocks $1 Off Its Platter

width=I noticed when I walked by yesterday that the 99% Vegetarian Food Cart on Broadway & Liberty has slashed the price of its four item platter to $4.99 from $6. Being that it’s the “super special of the month” you have to take advantage before March 1. I’m not sure that $1 is going to sway a lot of people who normally crave meat into eating there, but it’s worth a shot.
