Flatiron Lunch: Los Tacos de Atlixco de New York Serves Up Tacos, Posole and Tripe from a Truck

Every Friday our man UltraClay goes south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Last week in my round up of Flatiron food trucks I casually mentioned Los Tacos de Atlixco.  Maybe you took my word for it and checked it out, but for those who need to see visual proof this post’s for you.  I came across Los Tacos de Atlixco on the corner of 6th Avenue and 29th Street by accident a week or so ago. Seeing the truck crowd of Latino laborers from the area crowding around this old Fed Ex truck (the sign still says “No cash on board”), I changed my plans and decided I had to give it a try.

Ok, it’s not quite this warm today. But it’s as good as we’re going to get for a while. Next week, the temperatures drop back to the 40’s, then the 30’s. In the name of encouraging our readers to get some sun and to support the food cart and truck proprietors who have had a rough time of it this winter, we figure it’s as good a time as any to do a round up of the Flatiron Lunch area trucks. Check it out after the jump.

Flatiron Lunch: NYC Mobile Eatery Makes An Argentinan Chivito!

Every Friday our man UltraClay goes south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

I’m very late in trying out the generically named Argentinian food truck NYC Mobile Eatery. Back in the fall, luncher “El Dubya El” posted about it in the forums. It’s been on my radar ever since, but I only seemed to find it after I’d already eaten. This week, I finally tracked it down on 26th Street and 6th Avenue and was shocked to find a sandwich I haven’t had since I visited Buenos Aires years ago.

With so many new and notable places to eat in Flatiron, it’s easy to forget the little places that we pass by every day without thinking about it. One of them for me has been Tablespoon, a little cafe attached to a catering shop on 20th Street. It’s across from the color lab where I get my film developed, so I’ve noticed it before but never went in. I finally decided to investigate.

Flatiron Lunch: Our First Look at Grimaldi’s (Opening in The Limelight Next Week?)

Since Ultraclay is on vacation this week, he made me walk through a freakin’ blizzard was gracious enough to let me attend a Grimaldi’s press event for this week’s Flatiron lunch post (seriously, does that guy ever work?).

Grimaldi's Signage

There’s not much else to say about Grimaldi’s Pizzeria that hasn’t already been blogged, reported, or gushed about. Since it spun-off from Patsy’s pizza, it’s become a legendary establishment, and is oft cited as the model New York pie. But this level of exposure begets fanatical regulars, curious tourists, and ensuing long lines. Absurd lines are bad enough, but to be inconvenienced with a schlep to Brooklyn for pizza is enough to make someone want to stay in the city and eat questionable pho. But Flatiron Lunchers (and city dwellers) rejoice! The Grimaldi’s location in the Limelight Marketplace (6th Ave. btw. 20+21st) will be opening as early as next week (pending DOH approval). And in case you weren’t able to snag a slice of free pizza last week, here’s a preview of what to expect.

Flatiron Lunch: Turkish Kitchen Celebrates 20 Years With $10 2 Course Lunch Special

Every Friday our man UltraClay goes south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Last week, while I was in Kips Bay visiting the (apparently controversial) L’Annam, I came across Turkish Kitchen. Walking by, it looked a little too fancy to pay attention to – until I saw the sign out front advertising their $9.95, two course lunch special celebrating their 20th Anniversary. That definitely got my attention.

Flatiron Extra: Free Pizza at Grimaldi’s in The Limelight

_MG_5879 - Version 2

Word on the street is that classic Brooklyn pizzeria, Grimaldi’s is finally opening its Manhattan location in the Limelight Marketplace (on 6th Ave. btw. 20+21st) on Monday after months of delays. A quick call to confirm was met with the word ‘tentatively,’ but also with the much better words “free pizza.” All week – Yes, this week – from 12pm to 3pm, they will be handing out free slices to passersby. Freeloaders engage!

Flatiron Lunch: If You’re Craving Vietnamese L’Annam 28 Does the Trick

IMG_2440

After all my recent reminiscing about the meals I ate while in Vietnam, I found myself craving the flavors of Southeast Asia. Pho 32 and Golden City just weren’t going to cut it, so I decided to see what my options were in the Kips Bay/Murray Hill South area. I don’t often make my way that far east, so I thought I’d explore, if I didn’t find anything, I could always fall back on Baoguette. It didn’t come to that, and though I’m now fiending for a banh mi sandwich, I’m happy to have discovered L’Annam 28.

Flatiron Lunch: Choza Taqueria Has Gotten Much Better

_MG_9654 - Version 2

Back in October we gave you a first look at Choza Taqueria just after they opened. My initial visit didn’t blow me away, but Andrea seemed to like the tacos she had from the Open Air Market kiosk they opened downtown so I decided to give them some time to get their feet on the ground. This week I stopped in again and am glad to report that the Midtown location has stepped up their game.

Cevap Truck Brings Balkan Sausage to the Flatiron

Every Friday our man UltraClay goes south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

I not a big fan of shilling in the forums, so I was a little bit put off by this post from “Luncher Khubird” promoting the new Cevap Truck in Flatiron. But that all went away when I ended up passing by the truck on the way to drop off some film. Shillers or not, the menu looked pretty tasty and I just couldn’t pass up trying it…
