Flatiron Extra: Choza Taqueria Is Now Open

Normally we save our Flatiron stuff for the last day of the week, but we forgot to post this little bit of news on Friday…

As excited as I am for the fusiony Asian-Mex of Baorrito, sometimes you want a regular taco. Now we’ve got a place for that in the neighborhood. Choza Taqueria opened up this week, a welcome addition on a pretty dead strip of Madison, near 27th Street. I reported over the summer that Choza Taqueria was coming and watched with interest as Andrea checked out their branch in the Open Air Cafe downtown.

The place looks to still be a work in progress, so I’m going to hold off on a full scale post for a while. In the meantime, check out the menu after the jump.

The first thing that jumps out at me is that the prices are slightly higher with 3 tacos priced at $6.89 instead of $6 and the burritos at $7.58 over the $6.50 downtown. Overhead for a full-sized shop is clearly going to be pricier than an outdoor stand, so it’s understandable, I suppose. Let’s give them a little time to see if how they develop.

  • Another place I gotta check out soon. (Reminds me that I gotta revisit dos toros tacqueria too, now that they’re settled in.) Not a fan of bao-anything. puh-leaze.

  • I had a chicken Burrito here yesterday. It was better than Chipolte (which I hate) but not extraordinary. The chicken was shredded and not very flavorful, they only had black beans, the rice was white (I prefer yellow). It’s right around the corner from where I work so I’m sure to try it again (and again). I’ll report back.

Chicken and pork tacos are somewhat bland, but the beef is good and the Chorizo special is excellent. Reminds me more of the mexicue truck than chipotle or qdoba.

  • Food looks like Mexicue, but taste is nowhere near

Not impressed with the diminutive ‘silver dollar’ size tacos. Fillings were lackluster. While not very tasty, the ingredients appeared decent quality and the price was OK i suppose, but the whole experience elicted one big “MEH”
