Flatiron Lunch: Rocking Horse Cafe is a Decent Neighborhood Mexican Restaurant

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

If you’re like me, you are constantly looking for good Mexican food that falls in the happy middle ground between:

1. Overpriced and obnoxiously nuevo Mexican

2. $5 Nacho Places. You know the ones…nothing over $5, all have the word Taco in the title. Taco King, Super Taco, Fresh Taco, New Taco, New Fresh Taco, Taco Express, Taco Taco, Taco Bandito (actually, that last one has caught my eye, perhaps just because the name is fun to say, but if it is any good, you might see it here on Flatiron Lunch in the future.)

3. Chain fast-food Mexican.

But if reasonably priced, quality Mexican food, is what you’re looking for than you might want to check out Rocking Horse Café.

NY Mag Likes The Flatiron: This week, New York Magazine released its Best of New York issue and as usual, Midtown didn't get a lot of love (Don Antonio was lauded for its deep-fried montanara but that's it) but the Flatiron got some warm fuzzies. The Cannibal is said to have New York's best hot dog(!) and Eataly's rooftop beergarden La Birreria was touted as being among the best microbreweries in town. Out of price range Indian spot, Junoon also got the nod for best goat.

Flatiron Lunch: Jaiya is Your Local Spicemonger

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

My personal Thai food history is a bit of a pad Thai haze. I’m not proud. But I have been working to expand my horizons and really search out the best in town, which brought me to Jaiya.

I first started hearing about Jaiya Oriental-Thai years ago from a friend who would regularly make pilgrimages to the original outpost in Hicksville, Long Island, which, sadly, seems to have closed. But lucky for us, the New York City location is thriving. I had previously gone for dinner a handful of times with much success, so I was thrilled to find out they have a lunch special.

Flatiron Lunch: Our First (And Second) Taste of Wahoo’s Fish Tacos

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

As promised last week, I ate at the newly open Wahoo’s Fish Taco (on Park Ave. btw 24+25th, and am pleased to report that it does not disappoint! I even went twice to be sure… uh… you know.  For science.

Flatiron Lunch: A Boozy $10 Lunch at the Original Lillie’s

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

I took the opening of Lillie’s in Midtown as I sign that I should head to the original Lillie’s on 17th Street to try their $10 lunch special- the same special that’s $13 at the location on 49th btw. B’way+8th. (Sorry, Midtown Lunch’ers!) Did I also mention that the special includes a beer? Who isn’t a fan of a greasy pub lunch with a beer?

As we reported back in September, west coast chain Wahoo’s Fish Taco is coming to Park Ave btw. 24+25th… not exactly Midtown Lunch range.  But it is a bonafied Flatiron Lunch, and we’re sure there are number of lunchers in Midtown proper who will make the trek for some tasty fish tacos.  So with that in mind, we are pleased to report that Wahoo’s is officially opening at on Monday, Feb 20th! Check out the menu after the jump…

Flatiron Lunch: Bhatti’s Indian Lunch is a Step Above

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Even though most of Curry Hill falls into the ML budget, not all Indian lunch specials are created equal, and Bhatti is a step above in taste. As a self-confessed Indophile, I have a goal of eating my way through all the restaurants in Curry Hill (who’s with me?), but I keep getting held up by finding a restaurant so good, that it is hard to move on. The reigning champ is Bhatti.

Flatiron Lunch: Keko Café Makes a Solid French Baguette Sandwich

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch. This week we’re excited to welcome a new Flatiron contributor… Sarah Z. Make her feel welcome!

Keko Café caught my eye with their somewhat odd but welcoming sidewalk blackboards that venture beyond the power of suggestion. “You need a cup of coffee.” “I do? Okay.” Inside, the interior and menu reflect an eclectic but charming Parisian café serving baguette sandwiches, crepes and quiches, among other things.

Flatiron Lunch: The Cannibal’s Grilled Cheese is No Ordinary Sando

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Cannibal

During the late summer last year, the restaurant Resto expanded into a neighboring space and opened The Cannibal (29th btw Park+Lex), a beer shop and butcher that serves small plates at a rustic, masculine communal bar area and a small backyard patio which is open during warmer weather. When I stopped by it was full of men in suits watching ESPN’s coverage of the Australian Open. It’s basically a spot after our own hearts complete with fridges holding about 350 brews, eight taps, a back area butcher’s counter selling homemade charcuterie among other meats, and a menu that includes a Pigs Head Cuban. I decided to leave the Cuban for Clay to try, and went with another delicious sounding sandwich just at the ML ceiling, their Grilled Cheese. But this wasn’t an ordinary cheesy sandwich.

Flatiron Lunch: The New Schnipper’s Makes a Mayo-licious Tuna Melt

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Schnipper's

New York got its first taste of Schnipper’s Quality Kitchen when the Midtown branch (8th Ave + 41st) opened up a while back, and it seemingly became known for its burgers. Late last year, the second location opened on 23rd at Madison, almost directly across from Shake Shack. I think we all know whose burgers are better, so when I stopped by the Flatiron Schnipper’s this week, I wanted to try something else, maybe something for the token vegetarian in your group who always complains when you hit up the Shack that there’s nothing for them, but fries and deep-fried mushroom sandwiches!
