PROFILED: Midtown Lunch’er “Patrick”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Patrick, a Maxim editor who’s not gay but has a man crush on Uncle Gussy.

Name: Patrick

Age: 35

Occupation: Editor at Maxim

Where in Midtown do you Work?: Midtown East

Favorite Kind of Food: Italian and Chinese

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Overcooked meat. It’s like, what’s the point?

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Fried Oyster Po’ Boy from Grand Central Oyster Bar, Double Cooked Sliced Pork Belly from Szechuan Gourmet (on 39th btw. 5+6th), Cuban sandwich from Margon (on 46th btw. 6+7th).

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Uncle Gussy’s cart (on 51st and Park). The food is consistently good and–even though I’m straight–I have a total man-crush on the bald guy there.

Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? The Trini Paki Boys Cart (on 43rd and 6th). I love doubles!

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? I’ve never been, but maybe Saigon? All the pho and bánh mì I could eat, plus I’ve always wanted to drink from a bag.

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? Is there anywhere in this city with decent Buffalo wings?

Go an answer for Patrick? Put it in the comments. And, as always, if you want to be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate)? Email editor@midtownlunch.com.

  • interesting. i actually prefer overcooked meat. it’s the best!

    Blind Tiger has great wings.

  • overcooked meat is, by definition, cooked longer than it should be, i.e. wholly subjective and depending on the type of meat dish. I like most steak medium rare, but my stir fry flank steak better be closer to well done.

    Re: Buffalo Wings

Shorty’s, on 9th Ave btn 41st and 42nd, has the best wings outside of Buffalo!

the best wings in the city…BAR COASTAL, BAR COASTAL, BAR COASTAL. i really and truly cant recommend them enough. its a trip to 1st and 78th. but i promise you, they are worth it. please, go.

    • So, what’s the name of the place?

Can also go drinking at American Trash before or after, or both.

thats right, i forgot to tell people that BAR COASTAL has the best wings in the city. thanks for reminding me. i dont know why i would have said BAR COASTAL has the best wings in the city in my first post.

and, no, i dont work for/at/with BAR COASTAL. just love the wings there. far and away the best in the city.

    • the wings at bar coastal are actual Atomic Wings, which from my experience aren’t that great, but i haven’t tried them at bar coastal. I second 1849, the wings are awesome and cost 20 cents at some point every day. i also love the tenders from best winger, but not a big fan of the wings.

the wings at BAR COASTAL are atomic wings but they make the sauces on their own at BAR COASTAL. there is kerry’s way which is quite good and the hot wings are much better than normal atomic wings hot sauce.

its just the wing itself (meaty and tender) that they get from atomic wings. much better than 1849, in my opinion

  • I think it’s obvious, editor of Maxim Magazine plus buffalo wings = Hooters, breaded or naked.

    • Hooters food is inedible. Somehow they have managed to find the absolute skinniest wings on earth, which they overcook and drown in awful sauce. If their wiatstaff were fully dressed, they would be out of business in a week.

i dont think Hooters is very good but the food is certainly edible.

their wait staff here isnt nearly attractive enough to make me eat there. down south, id go to Hooters for the women any day

      • Hooters locations that are NOT in NYC generally have very good wings. The ones in NYC are the worst of any Hooters I’ve had (probably 6-7 different locations around the country, incl. New Orleans, DC area, Minneapolis, AC).

Since the closing of Scruffy Duffy’s, the title of best NYC wings is indeed up for grabs.

      • @Stevenp, I couldn’t agree with you more about Scruffy Duffy’s, hopefully this thread will continue with all the good suggestions and we can crown a new wing king of NYC.

      • Hooters wings are terrible regardless. I was subjected to one in Florida and one in the Myrtle Beach area. The wings at the Myrtle Beach location were nearly raw; when we pointed this out to the server, she just shrugged and walked away. They remained on the bill.

      • Dave, those sound pretty bad. My general Hoot experience has been large, juicy, well-cooked, lightly-breaded wings with good basic sauce. Kind of like a bigger version of 1849 wings, which I do like. The NYC Hoot has small, scrawny/dry/tough wings. Gotta try Blind Tiger (have meant to do so), maybe BAR COASTAL. Looked up McFaddens and could not find a single positive review of their wings anywhere.

      • Have you heard anything about BAR COASTAL and their wings?

Mudville 9 in Tribeca has great wings. I hear Wogies is good too, but I have yet to try it.

McFaddens has the best wings during their happy hour for half price. The best boneless wings in the city, and trust me, papabear likes his wings

    • boneless wings aren’t wings at all. They are breaded chunks of non-wingmeat chicken. papabear may like buffalo-style chicken, but they still ain’t wings.

  • ooo hey…. Maxim, can we do an ML lunch photo spread? I’d be happy to pose with some street meat…

I grew up in Rochester, went to school in Buffalo….I dont go around town sampling wings, but have lived in Murray Hill for 6 years now. Best Wingers on 38th and 2nd, you must order Buffalo Wings with “new yorkers sauce” – why they hell they call it new yorkers sauce, i have no idea….but none the less, it is a good wing. Social Eatz has amazing chicken wings, not buffalo style though, more korean spiced.
