Skip the Line & Get Free Soup at Tuesdays Grand Re-Opening of the Original Soup Nazi
FloFab reported it weeks ago, and we just got confirmation that the original location of Soup Kitchen International (the spot on 55th just west of 8th Ave popularized by Seinfeld as the “Soup Nazi”) will reopen on Tuesday at Noon… and according to their website, they’ll be giving away free t-shirts on opening day. The Soup Man’s people offered us a VIP pass to skip the line for free soup (and the T-Shirt as well) but you know we don’t like to do that kind of thing… however, we’ll gladly let them give it to you! Want to win the pass and the shirt? Leave a comment with either your favorite S.K.I. soup (or whichever soup sounds the best to you). We’ll randomly select a winner today at 5pm, so they have time to mail you the prize before Tuesday.

On opening day the following 12 soups will be served:
- Al’s Famous Lobster Bisque
- The World’s Best Mulligatawny
- George’s Favorite Turkey Chili
- Jerry’s Favorite “Buckle your Knees” Crab Bisque
- Award winning Chicken Vegetable
- Chicken Chowder
- Shrimp and Corn Chowder
- Italian Wedding
- Lentil
- Minestrone
- Gazpacho
- Cucumber Soup
I have many fond memories of the original Soup Kitchen International from back in the day. Their famous chicken chili was my go to splurge lunch, so I’m a little bit sad that it appears to have been replaced by “George’s Favorite Turkey Chili”.
There was something quirky and special about Soup Kitchen International. Each of the soups came with its own specially selected side and fruit as well as a piece of really good dark chocolate. The SoupMan Franchise tried to replicate this, but it always felt a bit “corporate” to me (The specially paired fruit became a choice of apple or orange and the good piece of chocolate was subbed with a Lindt Lindor Truffle. Meh.) If I want overprice mass produced soup, I’ll hit up Hale & Hearty.
Here’s hoping that the reopened location lives up to the legacy of the original. You know I’ll be there on opening day, waiting in line to pay for my soup (damn Zach and his “we don’t take free food” rules!)

I am all about the Lobster Bisque. I had the shrimp soup there once before the “sell out” period and I was disappointed. Some of the shrimp were fresh and some were clearly frozen

Awesome, never tried their soup. I would go for Lobster Bisque.

Lobster Bisque! I had it only once right before this place shut down – back in 2003 I think – and I actually got yelled at for lingering too long over the selections ….
