PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Elizabeth”
Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Elizabeth, half of the team that runs The Skint- a great blog dedicated to the daily listing of free and cheap food, events, and other stuff around New York City.
Name: Elizabeth
Age: 36
Occupation: Hired pen/content jockey (and half of the team behind The Skint)
Where in Midtown do you Work?: Depends where assignments/meetings take me, so pretty much all over.
Favorite Kind of Food: Vietnamese, French, Chinese, Szechuan , Colombian, Mexican, seafood, cheese, ramen; anything pickled or smothered in garlic
Least Favorite Kind of Food: Anything from a steam table or buffet (with the exception of City Bakery)
Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Tantan-men at Sapporo (on 49th btw. 7th), wonton noodle soup (with duck) at Hing Won (on 48th btw. 5+6th), fried fish at Happy Well Being Cart (R.I.P.), and I’ll cobble together a picnic when the greenmarket comes to Rockefeller Plaza.
“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Hing Won, definitely.
Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? The Biryani cart at 46th & 6th.
If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Near the Paris stock exchange, where a chicken leg or a slice of pâté at Bouillon Chartier is cheap and delicious. Or Sunset Park ’s Fifth Avenue, so I could just tack from food cart to chicken joint to taqueria.
Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? Where do I find an excellent bowl of pho in Midtown?
Sadly, I don’t think it exists. Pho 32 (in Koreatown on 32nd btw. 5+B’way) is ok, but I don’t think anybody would call it “good” (probably owing to the fact that the owners probably aren’t Vietnamese.) I think they serve Pho at Boi Sandwich though. Anybody try that version? Or have another recommendation for Elizabeth? Feel free to leave it in the comments.

No steam table or buffet for you? Does that mean you even skip those steam tables of lamb chops, pigs in a blanket and bacon wrapped scallops at a wedding?
As for reports of good Vietnamese noodle soups in midtown, not true. Those reports are utterly pho-NY.

Great lunch picks! The only place that I can think of that serves pho in midtown is Pho 32 in K-town. However, their pho pretty sub-par.

Saigon 48 is located in midtown, but based on the menu and what I’ve had, it’s a sister restaurant to L’Annam

Well, Elizabeth, I think you are right on, very cool, and almost cute (for a New Yawka).
You are very smart to avoid those NYC ‘buffets’ and steamtables, and hopefully those ‘food carts’ as well — unless your vaccinations are updated daily.
And, why not try adding some good ole AMERICAN food to your ‘favorites list’. Why, pshaw, you might just enjoy it!
Say, a nice healthy meal of Southen’ fried chicken, collard greens with ham hocks, deep-fried okra, sweet potato pie and Sweet Tea.

Trust me, “FRED” is in reality a VERY JEALOUS female (from Brooklyn) who spends her time trolling the food blogs and attempting to denigrate EVERY other female of whom she considers to be ‘successful’, and thereby of whom she is so insanely jealous.

Eh, no one seemed to much care for the theme songs, so I kinda dropped them. I’ll see what me and Barney can come up with for next week.
Also, I am now seeing more Moira Kelly or Sasha Alexander than Patricia Heaton – again, nothing denigratory there

Well, I look at the one liner FotW as a MTL tradition – sorta like a decorated tree at Christmas, only not as good, but to be fair, less work.
No one sees the resemblance to any of the named actresses?

There’s Lannam (not in Midtown) but they’re only okay.
