TONY’s Cheap Eats Issue Follows the ML Pricing Model

Time Out New York’s Cheap Eats issue hits the newsstands today, and in case you weren’t sure that it’s meant to compete with the New York Magazine cheap eats issue it kicks off with this message from the Editor: “A certain other Cheap Eats issue this week features the foods of New York, but comes with a punch line: “all* for under $25.” And then at the asterisk: “*Okay, almost all.” $25? Cheap? Last time we checked, a $16 sandwich from Le Cirque (“as God intended, with a fine glass of the best Meursault”) is not cheap.” (I love how everyone is picking on the sandwich from Le Cirque.) Just like Midtown Lunch, everything in the Time Out NY issue is under $10, and unlike NYMag they’ve listed a decent number of Midtown Lunch options.

The issue also has a whole section of picks dedicated to Murray Hill, and a whole section dedicated to the best options in the Penn Station area, including Tina’s Restaurant (on Mad btw. 33+34th), Carl’s Steaks (3rd btw. 34+35th), Baoguette (Lex btw. 25+26th), Djerdan (38th btw. 7+8th), Go Go Curry (38th btw. 7+8th), Fay Da Bakery (34th btw. 7+8th), Mandoo Bar (32nd btw. B’way+5th), and Pick a Pita (8th btw. 39+40th.) Plus some great technically out of bounds spots like Mooncake Foods, and Minar (on 31st btw. B’way+5th).

I know it’s impossible to make these massive issues completely flawless, but there was one inclusion that I have to take issue with… I know that some of the items at the original Manganaro’s (on 9th Ave. btw. 37+38th) can top $10, but to include their next door neighbor on the list- the inferior Manganaro’s Hero Boy- is a travesty.  The only reason anybody would eat at Hero Boy, is because they’re scared of dealing with the ladies who run the original. On taste, the original is head and shoulders above Hero Boy. See the complete TONY Cheap Eats list here>>
