The “Rutgers Grease Truck” Special Finally Arrives!

I’ve been begging for it ever since the Midtown Lunch Sandwich Challenge began, and word is the Papa Perrone Truck (on 55th btw. Mad+Park) is stepping up to the plate today. Chicken fingers. Mozzarella sticks. French Fries. Sauce. Roll.  If you’ve ever been to the Rutgers grease trucks you know exactly what I’m talking about.  This may or may not be a one time only deal (depending on how it’s received, how tough it is to make, etc.) so if you’re interested in trying this monstrosity, you might want to hit up the truck today.

  • @ Fred–not sure if there is a “Fat Goats,” but if there was, I think I would try to incorporate some “goats” in the sandwich, all ground up like oregano….LOL

@ Dubya El—I vaguely remember the Varsity (I graduated about 15 yrs ago) but only remember their pizza. From what I recollect, it wasn’t very good, and since all my friends worked at the other places on Marshall St., I’d go there for the free slices….There was one sandwich shop on the other side of town which made a sandwich called “The Artemis”–which was chicken cutlet, lettuce, tomato, ham and swiss on a giant hero. Basically, a chicken cordon blue. It was heaven. They also made “the Poseidon,” which was pastrami coleslaw and melted swiss on a hero. That too was to die for….

  • The descripption of the “Fat Fell@tio” just made me touch myself.

  • If you add cheesesteak to it its called a Fat B*tch

  • The Fat Goats is the Fat Daryl with curry sauce in place of marinara

  • Thanks, D.

I hope that Papa Perrone makes this sandwich a staple on the menu. It does not seem that difficult to make, since he most likely has all the ingredients on hand in any event.

  • It was tasty and I am just now coming out of my food coma.

  • i ate the fried eggplant baked zitti thingy. it was really good. this would be very filling for most people, so i was quite impressed for 7 bucks

  • @ Fred—DUDE! Fat Goats and Curry! Are you f’ing kidding me???? It is well known that curry is on my “NOT TO EAT EVER” LIST! How can this travesty be reality???? That is the one thing it could never be! Irony is really sticking its digits in my behind today–in an uncool way!!!!!!

  • @Goats, thanks for the heads up about the Artemis and Poseidon, was planning on road tripping for the ‘Cuse game this fall so I’ll ask around to grab one of these bad boys.

@Fred, thanks for the link, might have to take a detour into Ithaca for a Hot Truck! I have a feeling this is what Quiznos has been trying to do all these years but has failed to.

  • Is it true that the Fat Darryl will be available on Tuesdays from here on out?

  • Goats, eat the god damned curry!! and make us proud at the GoGo Curry contests!!

If you hate curry, do you hate mole?

  • You guys asked for it so I made it, we will have it on Tuesday and will try to have enough to make everyone happy. I am sorry for all those who missed out ,But no need to worry. @ Kev I thought about the garlic bread and it will be an option . What I will do is bring the fryer on the truck and fry everything fresh that morning and put the sandwich together when you order it so it will be as fresh as possible. Tell you the truth I am not a big fan of my food all mashed together yet when I tried the sandwich I like it. C ya next Tuesday

  • Yeah, thanks Papa Perrone!!

  • Thanks JP! See you Tuesday early as its going to be another mad run on the slightly revamped sandwich!

  • Mamacita–Just for you, I’ve been working on my curry and cilantro tolerances. I’m pretty sure they have snuck into some recent foods I’ve eaten, in very smallish quantities, and I have gotten it down without any violent incidents. But a full on curry platter—I’m not there yet…

As to Mole, since I think it has cilantro in it somehow, it may be tough for me to eat. I went to Rosa Mexicana a few yrs back and cried like a school girl when my food came topped with what I believe was a Mole sauce….I had 2 bites and wept openly, since I specifially stated no cilantro can be in anything you serve me…and there were definite traces that provoked some gagging. I guess I’m probably not a mole fan….

  • Cilantro is an odd thing. For a small but significant percentage of folks like myself, it takes like soap. Seriously. I wish it didn’t, as it sounds liek the rest of you really enjoy this herb. Check the ‘Leaves’ section of the wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriander)

  • Red mole (and all the variations from Oaxaca) doesn’t have cilantro. But now you have me wondering? I’d need to call my mom to be sure, she’s the true wetback.

  • err….when i said “takes like soap” in my previous comment, I meant “tastes like soap”

  • @ Fred: That is pretty much a spot on description!!! It kind of does taste like soap!!! It is a very offensive taste to me, but I’m trying to adapt….
