Thanks to Lunch’er Chris for the Photo

I was pretty excited to get this email in the old ML Inbox recently, since the fried pork and plantains sandwich from Sophie’s was one of the inspirations for the Midtown Lunch Sandwich Challenge:

“Today I noticed that Sophie’s has a new ‘Special’ sandwich called the ‘Pernil with a Kick’.  It is almost the same as the infamous Fried Pork w/plantain sandwich but uses the roast pork (pernil) and they add their green sauce.  The pernil is more moist than the fried pork version and the green sauce does have a nice kick.  It was good.  Very good.”

Awww yeah. Bring it on.

  • I tried this today at the 3rd Ave. Location. I loved it, but I love this type of food. The pernil was good. It wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but it was tender. The special sauce and the plaintains gave it just the right amount of flavor. It was delicious and in the top tier of the sandwiches I’ve tried so far.

  • I must say for 2 months old Harry’s diction, punctuation and spelling is bloody marvelous.

  • This was super fantastic. But they are very slow at the 41/Lex joint and not enough platanos.

  • wonderful… A very satisfying sandwich, fulfilling, and $6 is a pretty good deal in midtown. The plantains and the onion go so well together and compliment the pork perfectly. The pork was a little dry, but with the plantains and green sauce, it wasn’t even a problem. The bread was also a perfect consistency, a bit crusty, but soft enough not to clash with the texture. A great experience.

  • Wow…what a sandwich. One of my faves!

  • I love this sandwich! I order it a la carte from Tina’s (a former Sophies). That means I order the Pernil sandwich, add the plantains and the green sauce. It costs $8.00 there, but I must say it’s a VERY VERY VERY good sandwich and it’s HUGE. I usually eat one half for lunch, then take the other home for dinner. Yes, I really do think it’s THAT good.
As for the other sandwiches, I really liked the duck pastrami sandwich from FreeFoods. I didn’t care for the Thanksgiving Dip…the stuffing was tasteless and the cranberry overwhelmed! But this is running first in MY midtown lunch challenge! Haven’t tried the rest since I can only order lunch (that work will pay for ) from Seamlessweb…
MidtownLunch should try and do a Challenge promotion with Seamless…almost everyone I know is on it!
