Sophie’s Cuban Enters the Sandwich Challenge

Thanks to Lunch’er Chris for the Photo
I was pretty excited to get this email in the old ML Inbox recently, since the fried pork and plantains sandwich from Sophie’s was one of the inspirations for the Midtown Lunch Sandwich Challenge:
“Today I noticed that Sophie’s has a new ‘Special’ sandwich called the ‘Pernil with a Kick’. It is almost the same as the infamous Fried Pork w/plantain sandwich but uses the roast pork (pernil) and they add their green sauce. The pernil is more moist than the fried pork version and the green sauce does have a nice kick. It was good. Very good.”
Awww yeah. Bring it on.

@W&D – I just started listing them at the bottom of the Sandwich Challenge Homepage

Nice, $6.00… Now that’s change I can believe in!
-
Will Zach ever have to buy a sarnie in NY ever again?
-
That sounds like a pretty dominant sandwich. Would appreciate any intelligence as to whether Tina’s (specifically, the one on 56th) is also participating.
-
I just called the 96 Chambers Street branch and the woman was going to check on it and told me to call her back..but didn’t think it was available.
I’m going to go make a picket sign right now.
-
don’t they have all the ingredients? Why cant they just custom build it?
-
I’m sure they do but I want it for $6 and I bet they’re going to want to charge more.
Dubbin don’t dissuade me from making a picket sign..come on!
-
fyi: i’ve been seeing coupon cards for free gourmet coffee at freefoods. no purchase required. i picked up several of the cards this morning off a desk in the front of equinox on 2nd ave at 54th. trying to find out where else you can get these cards.
-
@ Daniel Krieger: just saw a nice ad for you on Eater
-
I wonder if the downtown location will have this…. Hmmm
-
Just had it. Damn good…and I’m Cuban.
-
Yep, had it too… damn good indeed… damn good indeeeeeed.
-
i believe the 41st and lexington location is closed. there’s one on 5th avenue by 34th.
-
41st and Lex is open (at least it was yesterday).
-
Had the sandwich at the 41st location today. It’s open and the Midtown Lunch Special sign is proudly displayed. Took me a while to respond because I’m now waking from the food coma.
-
sorry–you’re right–Lex is open but 5th is closed?
-
The Sophie’s on Lex and 41 is open, the Sophie’s on 33rd is now Tina’s Restaurant, and the Sophie’s on 40th btw. 7+8th is closed
-
They also had this posted on their 23rd street location

Wow! That was Deeeeeelicious! What a perfect combination. Pernil, good! Maduros, mmmm good! Onions, Mayo and Green Sauce, real good!
Thanks Zach, ur a genius.
-
I tried this today at the 3rd Ave. Location. I loved it, but I love this type of food. The pernil was good. It wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but it was tender. The special sauce and the plaintains gave it just the right amount of flavor. It was delicious and in the top tier of the sandwiches I’ve tried so far.

I must say for 2 months old Harry’s diction, punctuation and spelling is bloody marvelous.
-
This was super fantastic. But they are very slow at the 41/Lex joint and not enough platanos.
-
wonderful… A very satisfying sandwich, fulfilling, and $6 is a pretty good deal in midtown. The plantains and the onion go so well together and compliment the pork perfectly. The pork was a little dry, but with the plantains and green sauce, it wasn’t even a problem. The bread was also a perfect consistency, a bit crusty, but soft enough not to clash with the texture. A great experience.
-
Wow…what a sandwich. One of my faves!
-
I love this sandwich! I order it a la carte from Tina’s (a former Sophies). That means I order the Pernil sandwich, add the plantains and the green sauce. It costs $8.00 there, but I must say it’s a VERY VERY VERY good sandwich and it’s HUGE. I usually eat one half for lunch, then take the other home for dinner. Yes, I really do think it’s THAT good.
As for the other sandwiches, I really liked the duck pastrami sandwich from FreeFoods. I didn’t care for the Thanksgiving Dip…the stuffing was tasteless and the cranberry overwhelmed! But this is running first in MY midtown lunch challenge! Haven’t tried the rest since I can only order lunch (that work will pay for ) from Seamlessweb…
MidtownLunch should try and do a Challenge promotion with Seamless…almost everyone I know is on it!

is there a list of all the restaurants/carts that are participating so far? just want to know which ones I haven’t tried yet.
