Midtown Lunch 2008 in One Gigantic Photo

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, we always end the year with a gigantic photo of every lunch consumed in Midtown that year.  Whether or not I should be proud or ashamed is something I’ll leave to you… but I’m pretty sure my wife and mother are concerned for my health, and this spectacle will only validate their fears.

So here it is… a photo of every Midtown Lunch in 2008

  • Who are you talking too Peanut? You’re quoting me, but I never attack DC?
    Very confused, anyways HAPPY 2009!

  • Sorry Mamacita! I was actually quoting ben quoting you. Happy new year to all, even the figments of Doc Chuck’s imagination!

  • I had to call up an old recipe of mine which was our contribution to the New Year’s Eve party at the Clubhouse. It is a recipe for one of our favorite appetizers that Dr. E. and I have been enjoying for over 20 years — long before the New Yawk City internet crowd ever heard of them.
And way before the aforementioned individuals bastardized the Texas original, calling them ABT’s (Atomic Buffalo Turds), wrapping them in bacon, and otherwise attempting to copy Texan’s tastes, but generally screwing them up as the New Yawk City crowd always does.
    Armadillo Eggs:
½ to ¾ pound Monterey Jack cheese
1 pound bulk hot sausage (Jimmy Dean brand recommended)
1½ cups buttermilk biscuit mix (divided into 3 equal parts)
15 medium canned, pickled jalapeno peppers
    1 package (2 envelopes) Shake-n-Bake® for pork
    1-2 beaten eggs

Mix together thoroughly: ½ pound grated cheese and ½ pound bulk sausage, then add 1½ cups buttermilk biscuit mix (divided into 3 parts), adding each part separately.
The mixture will become a very stiff dough and should be kneaded for several minutes. Set aside.
Slit and seed the pickled jalapeno peppers. Stuff each pepper with a piece of Monterey Jack cheese and pinch the pepper closed around the cheese.
Pinch off a bit of the cheese-sausage-biscuit mixture and pat into a flat pancake about ¼-inch thick.
Place the cheese-stuffed pepper in the middle of the pancake and wrap pepper completely with dough, being sure that all edges and ends are completely sealed.
Roll the dough-covered pepper back and forth in your hands to mold the egg shape.
Roll each “egg” in Shake-n-Bake for Pork until coated. Dip armadillo eggs in beaten egg and then in Shake-n-Bake again. At this point, the armadillo eggs may be either baked or frozen (for future use).

To Prepare: Bake in a medium oven (350° F.) about 20-25 minutes.
If cheese begins to bubble out, remove from the oven. The “eggs” will seem soft to the touch, but upon cooling will firm and crust nicely.
    Best served warm.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR from DocChuck

  • Anyone wondering what happens to the other 1/2 lb of sausage meat?

    I didn’t think so….

  • Every place I go in food blog NYC land this guy Doc Chuck is being a nincompoop.
I read he lives in MD. I agree with ben this guy is a pain in the keister. Now shilling his Walmart recipes on here. Maybe where he lives that is all you can get is Jimmy Dean rolled around in Shake and Bake. We live in NYC, we have every food known to modern man at our disposal. I think you are on the wrong blog Doc Chuck. You just stir the shit. Is there a blog for some city close to you like Baltimore? Why can’t you go piss them off?
I bet you have been through those blogs already.
    What luck?

  • I feel like i’m talking to a dead man.

  • Who else was stuck working today? Ugh!

Have a great weekend everyone, the first in 2009!

  • @ mamacita, sarah: wasn’t that a walgreen’s sandwich? anyways, a belated happy new year to everyone.

  • Zach – but which were the best three lunches of 2008? Maybe I’ll visit NYC this year and have some.

  • Dr. Elizabeth is out and I am cheesing off to my screen saver of Casa.

One more comment, Does anyone know where I can get a sneeze guard? I need one about monitor size.

  • It’s no wonder I gained 25 pounds this year since I started reading “Midtown Lunch”. Thanks for your support!!!

Maybe I need to start reading: “Midtown Starvation: the Anti-lunch” in 2009.
