PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Kate”

Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Kate, a Times Square gal who loves stuff wrapped up in other stuff- as long as you hold the dipping sauce. (She’s also agreed to submit our first Friday happy hour post… and from the look of the photo, she is clearly qualified.)

Name: Kate

Age:
25

Occupation:
Cog in the wheel of a major media corporation

Where in Midtown do you Work?:
Times Square. Eh.

Favorite Kind of Food:
I really love anything that’s wrapped up in another something and then cooked. So that means empanadas, dumplings, pierogies, and battered deep fried Oreos. I also enjoy a good curry.

Least Favorite Kind of Food:
Mayonnaise, mustard, ranch dressing, tahini sauce. Condiments in general I guess.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown:
The pizza place next to Dean and Deluca on W 46th btwn Bdway and 8th has a killer Grandma Slice. (I think it’s called Patzeria Perfect Pizza) I also frequent Green Symphony (43rd btwn Bdway and 8th) for their awesome buffet of warm stews and samosas. I also like Piece of Chicken (45th btw 8+9th) or Burger Joint (on 56th btw. 6+7th) if I’m feeling particularly greasy.

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? As I am a very lone luncher, my book tends to absorb most of my lunch hour. I’m guilty of just picking up a yogurt or granola bar from Cranberry Deli (45th and 6th) more than a few times a week. I also love to go up to Empanada Mama (9th and 51st), though I know that’s considered out of bounds.

Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? Ahhhh, the Sullivan St Bakery (on 47th btw. 10+11th), 99 Cent Pizza, and Madeliene ‘the crepe lady’ (on 49th btw. B’way+8th)

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? I would work in the East Village because if I could eat at Veselka everyday, my life might very well be a success after all.

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? Where’s the Mac and cheese at yo?

So, as you may or may not know- occasionally profiled lunch’ers will send in two photos. And less often than not, both will be so good that I feel required to post a second photo of the lunch’er. That photo (oh yeah, and a mac and cheese rec) after the jump…

I don’t even know what to say to that… I’m sure the commenters will think of something.

Anyway- it’s been awhile since we had a mac and cheese discussion… and even longer since I’ve had some mac and cheese in Midtown.  My standby has always been the by the lb. buffet at Cafe Duke, but that can get dangerous.  Maybe it’s time to try some of the suggestions… got any new ones?

And as always, if you want to be the next Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er, or you’d like to nominate somebody in your office email me at zach@midtownlunch.com

  • So I’m guessing she doesn’t like ‘white sauce,’ Doc Chuck will disappointed.

  • There’s a mac and cheese place somewhat out of bounds on 31 and 7th. I forgot what it’s called, but they only do Mac and cheese. (skillet style)

The Carribean kitchen in the ally near 34th and 7th also has pretty decent mac and cheese.

by the way, what do they serve at Veselka? it looks like a regular american cafe with a Russian(polish?) sounding name. is it really that good?

  • That second pic….im thinking a ‘i enjoy tossed salad’ line would be entirely inapropriate.

    Thought so.

  • I’ll save photo captioning for the true degenerates around here.

Mac and cheese – I know it’s out of bounds, but the the small portion (which is pretty well sized despite the name) at Duke’s on 3rd between 37th and 38th falls under the Midtown Lunch price range and is fantastic. A frequent go-to for our office. Also, the smaller small version served at Wharf bar across the street, between 38th and 39th, isn’t too shabby either. It gets all nice and crusty, served in a mini crock and there’s bonus points because you can get chili on top.

  • For the way out of bounds Mac and Cheese fix I’d recommend S’mac http://www.smacnyc.com

In bounds is Comfort Diner on 45th/3rd.

  • Love them country girls… and so lissotrichous.

    Champagne out of plastic cups?

Better than workboots, I suppose, but Andre? Really.

  • So…there’s no mac n’ cheese @ Piece of Chicken anymore? I thought that was one of her favorite spots…

Unless she wants some mac and cheese from somewhere else? The best places are way out of bounds for Midtown Lunch.

Some of the best I had is @ the Whole Foods on 14th st and Charles Southern Diner all the way on 155th st I think.

  • Regarding second photo:
    Oh, &*%$.
    I’m bracing myself.

  • Supermac is pretty decent for a mac & cheese fix over on 29th & 7th. Stick to the cheap ones.

That sweater must be the official uniform of the Mule Champagne Enema Squad

  • why do you look so happy in the second photo?

and @hungryAnon, are all whole foods made equal? how about the mac & cheese at the time warner center then? thoughts?

  • Don’t like condiments!??!111ONE

Salsa, Soy Sauce, Sriracha, Sour Cream, and those are just some of the S’s!

  • 2nd pic…Kate is whispering to her left…”Keep that damn tail still Mrs.Dochuck”

  • HungryANon… She asked for good mac n cheese suggestions… last time i went to piece of chicken, their mac and cheese was horrible. Tasted like nothing. Looked more like cheesecurds mixed with macaroni… didnt taste cheesy at all. I hear its hit or miss, but by and large this swung 3 times and missed. I dont know any good mac and cheese spots either so I’m paying attention.

  • Okay I’ve waited long enough…. under the heading if you want something done right…..

    Nice ass.

  • dines alone with a book at lunch, yet she’s the new happy hour correspondent…hmm.

  • Hey she drinks bubbly with farm animals…. come on now.

  • oh yeah…my favorite mac n cheese in midtown is pj clarke’s mac n cheese w/ peas and bacon

  • If you’re going to go with cheap bubbly at least go with a Cava. Andre is like syrup, bleh.

Don’t forget, this thursday is happy hour after work. Rudy’s bar! be there or be… well you know.

  • Don’t nobody go to no Veselka and clog it all up, now, y’hear?

  • Ahhh…pretty girl….champers…hamper in the back of the aston…..spring meadows…….sunburn on my arse.

    Happy days.
