PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Raechy”

Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. Recently I started taking nominations from friends and co-workers, which prompted this email:

I would like to nominate my friend Raechy to be a profiled luncher. Unlike me, she actually works in Midtown proper, and is a big meat enthusiast (she’d already been to the International Meat Buffet when I sent her the ML link), but she’s still willing to roll veggie with me and go to places like Zen Burger. Also she’s uber cute and really funny so I’m sure the rest of your loyal disciples would be psyched to see her and read what she has to say.

Thanks for the email Sarah. You had me at buffet… meet Raechy, a healthcare analyst who loves meat buffets and is a ramen connoisseur.

Name: Raechy

Age:
27

Occupation:
Healthcare Analyst

Where in Midtown do you Work?:
Reuters, in the hell that is commonly referred to as Times Square

Favorite Kind of Food:
Must there only be one? Tacos/eel sushi/dumplings.

Least Favorite Kind of Food:
Dessert

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: The Tonkatsu ramen at Men Kui Tei on 56th btw. 5+6th (I consider myself a very devoted ramen connoisseur). Also, I like the unlimited toppings salad and drink for 6 bucks at the unnamed deli on 41st btw. B’way+6th.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Haru on 43rd & 7th (yuck). Also Bela Vita pizza on 43rd & 7th is amazing and affordable.

Place you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: The chicken and rice cart on 43rd and 6th.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Anywhere in the world? Then Barcelona… I have a weakness for aioli. In NYC it would be the east village/LES, mainly for Fried Dumplings.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Haru an expensive Japanese chain owned by Benihana? And that’s your “goto” lunch? I need a job at Reuters!

Also- I have to say, I sort of respect your listing of dessert as least favorite kind of food. I love myself some sweets (are there any fat people that don’t?), but if given the choice between dessert, and an extra appetizer, or a 5th plate at the all you can eat buffet, chances are it’s the dessert that’s going to lose out. The whole “saving room” for dessert thing is not part of my eating vocabulary. If there’s room in there for dessert, I’ll have it. If not- tough nuggies for dessert.

That being said I am currently conducting “research” on a best chocolate chip cookie in Midtown piece. Anybody got a recommendation? Post it as a comment below.

And as always, if you want to be the next Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er, or you’d like to nominate somebody in your office, email me at zach@midtownlunch.com

I volunteer to help you find the best chocolate chip cookie in midtown. I love the cookies at Whole Foods, but it’s not exactly convenient. And yeah, I’m that girl getting the bag of cookies rather than just one… Hey, it’s economical, right?

Pret a Manger chocolate chip cookies (particularly when warm) are pretty divine.

  3. User has not uploaded an avatar

Pret’s cookies are solid when warm, but who can compete with the Treats Truck?

  4. User has not uploaded an avatar

The best chocolate chip cookie in Midtown is one bought from Levain Bakery on the UWS, and then carried into Midtown.

    What do I win?

The chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter chocolate chip cookies from Manhattan Espresso Cafe on 49th btw Lex and Third are out of this world! The nice Polish girls who work there bake them and serve them straight out of the oven and they are gooey and chocolately and oh so delicious! Go around 3pm when they bake them.

Lenny’s actually has really good chocolate chip cookies. They taste the same at all of their locations. A little dry, but still worth the trip.

Treatstruck is safe and well and will not be harmed if my demands are met.

    1.More profiles like this.

2.Zen Burger never to be mentioned again.

3.Liv Tyler to Divorce as of now.

Simon says non compliance and the truck gets it.

i hate to admit it, but those mini dark brown double/triple chocolate cookies at starbucks (i think they’re like $0.40 each) are pretty solid… the huge chocolate chunks are key.

i can’t believe i just endorsed anything starbucks.

at pret a manger, i usually opt for the rich chocolate cake with thick chocolate icing (and chocolate chunks – zing!), but i do roll with a few chocolate chip cookie disciples.

    You must support Treats Truck.

While not a cookie…Mexican Brownie is amazing.

  10. User has not uploaded an avatar

definitely not the best chocolate chip cookie, but cucina & co (in the met life building) offers some great deal after 2/3pm. three cookies & a coffee for like $0.5 or something. don’t quote me on it…but it used to be something like that.

  11. User has not uploaded an avatar

yes! mexican brownie is by far the best item on the treats truck menu

Not cheap, and not a chocolate chip cookie, but Tao has a giant fortune cookie that’s pretty outstanding. Had a work lunch there and the desserts were the highlight.

Sad note on the state of our culture. If you Google “Tao” the overpriced NYC restaurant comes up first. Yes, before the religious practice followed by hundreds of millions. Good times…

    Grown men arguing about cookies.

The girls i can understand…….but Lads.

    Also,jaffa cakes rule.

I second anon’s Cucina mention. They are pretty stellar. But I am a Treats Truck follower, and will have to go with Treats Truck edging out Cucina.

Pret’s are good, but aren’t they a $1? I think the same size cookie costs $.60 at Cucina.

You don’t “save up for dessert,” silly! Dessert goes into a different stomach. Everybody knows that.

(Oh, and – anything from treats truck.)

zach. nice work putting the cookie question into the mix with such an underwhelming profile.

My favorites, available at most delis and markets, are Tates.

  17. User has not uploaded an avatar

Sigh.. damn, Rudy, I’m disappointed in you.
Here you are commenting, even if negatively, on a damn cookie question when the most important thing has YET to be addressed!!

And that is: what the hell is a “Raechy”??
    Rachel + Stacey?

  18. User has not uploaded an avatar

Wooo Raechy! I would presently like to address Stan and Mamacita: Ms. Raechy wanted to be as economical in her question answering as possible. I’m a little disappointed my friend didn’t share any of her secret dumpling resources, and *hates dessert*??? WTF, girl we need to talk! Annnnd Raechy is a nickname for “rachel” I’ve encountered before, in this situation though I can’t say why her parents named her that, and she hasn’t told me her Chinese name (ancient chinese secret?) so I can only guess it sounds something like Rachel?

Best brownies in the world are found in Amsterdam.

    Beat that.

Mamacita,I couldn’t do the normal profile comments(you know, the nice ones).See Sarah proposed Raechy/Rachel’s for profiling and im in her bad books already.

Anyway, does anyone know the legal definition of the difference between a cookie/biscuit and a cake?

    (well, in UK anyway)

    Answer tomorrow.

  21. User has not uploaded an avatar

    cookie/biscuit = she’s 30 y.o.

  22. User has not uploaded an avatar

Weird, this only put up half of my post. Here goes:

    cookie/biscuit = she’s under 30 y.o.

    cake = she’s over 30 y.o.

  23. User has not uploaded an avatar

Stan – I also love Tates.

And I’ve been seen making a run for the choc chip cookies at the Conde Nast cafeteria – preferably the ones with the M&Ms thrown in.

  24. User has not uploaded an avatar

I am so sad that the Treats Truck is out sick this week that words cannot express my grief. Come back, Sugar, come baaaaaaaack.

  25. User has not uploaded an avatar

Sarah. Your defense of your friend demonstrated the weakness of the post. I have no doubts she is a lovely girl, great carnivore and holder of many asian food secrets — she just didn’t share much. . .

  26. User has not uploaded an avatar

    I’d like a taste of that box….

  27. User has not uploaded an avatar

The profile was so-so but the midtown luncher is HOT!

And I share Mala’s despair over the absence of Sugar in midtown. I hope lots of rest and a few quarts of oil will make him all better. Can’t wait to see him cruisin the midtown streets next week!

  28. User has not uploaded an avatar

An accounttant told me that the legal deffinition of a biscuit/cookie is that it goes soft when it goes off, whereas a Cake goes hard.

It was from an accounttant because of a VAT wrangle in UK over jaffa cakes not being classed as choccy cookies as they’re liable to VAT(purchase tax).

    Sorry.

    Oh Midtown Lunch..

Thanks for the profile!! Despite the fact that I will definitely concur- my answers are pretty lame. I know this is a cop out but when I was sent the list of questions, I didnt realize the object of the game was to write flowing prose on culinary tastes, I thought I was just supposed to name drop a few midtown joints. For that, Im sorry.

In my defense- my ass knows food. Both high brow and low. One day, I shall prove my worth to you ML, I shall…

Chocolate chip/chunk cookies at Certe (55th b/t 5th and 6th) are divine … they also have these caramel chunk cookies that I usually stock up on. They come in handy as bribery when I need to expedite my expense check …

  31. User has not uploaded an avatar

Raechy – Glad to hear that your ass knows food. What else does your ass know? Please explain using flowing prose.
    Cheers.
