PROFILE: Philly Luncher “Moira”

As is customary at Philly Lunch, every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Philadelphia. This week it’s Moira, a cheese loving, oyster shucking lady working in the restaurant industry.

Name: Moira

Age: 24

Occupation: Restaurant Manager

Where in Philly do you Work?: Passyunk Ave.

Favorite Kind of Food: Anything smothered in cheese.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Thanksgiving fare: turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, etc.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Philly: Erawan has the best lunch special in the city, and I’m a sucker for their panang curry. Garces Trading Co. always has some sort of delicious sandwich and too-good-to-be-healthy desserts. Bitar’s has great falafel and it’s usually pretty quiet. And if I can eat myself into a food coma without needing to go to work after, I’ll head to Good Dog or Royal Tavern for a burger and a beer.

What is a Pinolshake? (Gluten Free, Healthy Product Alert)

Biking around the Italian Market, I spotted a stand with two men selling something other than the usual random kitchen supplies or cheap produce you normally find in the market. When I checked it out, I found out about a new product I had never heard of before. The Blue Corn Alliance  is a new project that supports farmers in San Mateo Ozolco, a small town in Mexico, by selling their native corn meal product, Pinole,  in Philadelphia.

Wandering Wednesday: Fiery Soft Tofu from Jong Ka Jib

It’s Wednesday, and I am checking out another spot a little more North and East than where I usually dine. Today, its soft tofu for lunch.

Jong Ka Jib is apparently THE place to get hot, bubbly, spicy Korean style soft tofu called soon du boo.  I will admit that generally, I prefer my tofu like I prefer my butts- firm. Could I be swayed otherwise?
