Passover Friendly Salad at Sweetgreen

I just spent the past few days in NY for Passover being well fed by my mommy. Now that I am back, I have to feed myself. It gets tricky keeping it breadless in the best sandwich city in the world. I figured it was as good a time as any to check out the month old Washington Square location of Sweetgreen.

Vegetarian Friendly Mix Sandwich From Falafel Bar

I visited Falafel Bar on Chestnut Street when it first opened over 2 years ago, intended to write about it, and then basically forgot. Thats probably not the best sign, but I decided to make another visit to see if it might be more memorable.

The Burrito Bar at Animo

In May, the juice and healthy snack spot, Animo opened at 17th and Arch, making a lot of city workers happy. The menu consists of soups, salads, burrito variations, juices, smoothies, and frozen banana creations. They have a lot of claims about their products: healthy, made to order, organic, and hormone free to “nourish the mind and body”. Naturally, I was skeptical. But I am happy to report Animo did not sacrifice flavor in the name of nourishment.

Get the Steak at Agno

The folks from Pure Fare brought another concept to Center City last May. Like Pure Fare, the food is fast and healthy. At Agno, the set up is creating your own bowl up at the counter and wait just a few minutes while its all put together. Choose from a base of spinach, black rice, or a wrap. Bowls come with a protein, 3 toppings, and a sauce. The price will be based on your protein, plus any extra topping or sauces.

Argentinian Empanadas from Gavin’s Cafe

I love empanadas so much and there aren’t many to be found in Center City. Earlier this month Foobooz out out a list of places to find them and I was reminded of Gavin’s Cafe and their Argentinian empanadas all the way on the westernmost side of Center City.

It is a cute cafe with a few 2 top tables, but there is plenty of park space to eat nearby if  the sun is out and winds are low.

Brown Bag Lunch Delivered with a Smile: Miss Rachel’s Pantry

This week, Luncher JR is giving us a peak at what you can expect from a Miss Rachel’s Pantry delivery. Read about it today, order tomorrow, enjoy on Wednesday.

My mom never had much talent for the paper bag lunch. My elementary school years were littered with soggy PB&J and mealy apples. And I do mean littered — it all went right into the trash. But my paper bag lunch experience has been totally redeemed by an exceptional, yet little-known Philly lunch option: Miss Rachel’s Pantry’s Wednesday vegan lunch deliveries.

Did I lose you on vegan again? Stay with me. (Deliciousness ahead!)

On Wednesdays, the vegan chefs at Miss Rachel’s Pantry, which recently opened up a vegan café on Passyunk Avenue, deliver bagged lunches to University City, Center City, and Temple. The $11 price for a hearty meal includes delivery, though you will need a friend: minimum order two.

On Tuesday, the menu for each week goes up on the website and gets emailed out to subscribers. Orders must be placed by 5pm. There are always three options, including one gluten-free. Every meal includes a sandwich or meal salad, soup or side salad, and dessert. The food is “homestyle” and the portions generous. No, there’s no meat or dairy, but you will not walk away hungry.

Most often, the lunches are delivered by the criminally adorable chef/owner Rachel Klein herself, who calls or texts when she’s on her way. I met her in the lobby of my building around noon. She handed me two lunches with a big smile and a friendly, “Hope you enjoy it!”

A Trip to Honest Tom’s

Today Luncher Rachel heads to Honest Tom’s brick and mortar restaurant.

It’s hard to walk west down Locust without stopping at Koch’s for lunch—but the extra block is worth it for Honest Tom’s. Previously a food truck, Honest Tom’s new store front sits on 44th street between Locust and Spruce. Although the block is newly built up, boasting Local 44, Tampopo and the Lil’ Pop Shop alongside Honest Tom’s, the food at this funky, laid- back Mexican restaurant is as delicious as it was in the food truck days.

The bright, welcoming façade leads into an equally exciting interior—bustling kitchen in the back contrasts with the relaxed, no-fuss feel of the staff and waiting area. Offering a few tables to sit and chalkboards for menus, this place is hassle-free. The only focus is good food.

Although the menu is slightly limited (tacos, burritos, guacamole and salsa), there is
something for everyone. From chicken and steak to fish and sweet potato, the array of options eliminates the veto vote (unless someone doesn’t like Mexican food, but who doesn’t like Mexican…)
