The ML Team Eats Through the Entire Grand Central Oyster Bar Take Out Menu

Oyster Bar at Grand Central

Grand Central’s Oyster Bar take out window has been a longtime staple of the Midtown Lunch Lenten coverage- after all, nothing says Fat Tuesday like a nice Fried Oyster Po’ Boy. And yet it still remains one of the more underrated, under-reported gems of the New York lunching scene.  We couldn’t believe there has never been an official full +/-, so last Friday six of us converged on Grand Central to try each and every ML priced item on the menu.

Teriyaki Boy is Still Running Their $3.99 Lunch Special

DSC00011

Towards the end of last year Zach reported that Teriyaki Boy was doing a $3.99 lunch special in honor of their 20th anniversary for the entire month of December. Well, December has come and gone, but the $3.99 lunch special remains. Here’s what you get for less than a Lincoln…

Wondering About The Wings?: Curious about the chicken wings that NYC Cravings started serving again last week?  Phude NYC waited in the rain to try them, and seems to be a big fan (plus they look frickin' delicious.)  If you want to check them out for yourself, the Cravings Truck will be on 53rd btw. Park+Lex today.

Contributor Stalking: Wonder what our new ML contributors do when they're not eating in Midtown? (They're pretty easy to stalk!) Blondie and Brownie had dim sum at Golden Unicorn this past weekend, Ultraclay was at Cochon 555, Danny hit up Levain, Jason had some polish food, and it was Amy's Birthday yesterday!

Another Sign of Summer: Big Gay Ice Cream Truck Returneth

Choinkwich

Late last week one of New York City’s favorite trucks, Big Gay Ice Cream tweeted that they would be returning soon, and now we have confirmation! Next Thursday, April 1st, it will be choinkwiches and Nutella sandwiches galore. No word though on where the first spot will be, but there is an open one very close to my office. Last season they had no trouble parking in Midtown at night, but never seem to find a spot that “worked” during the day.  Be sure to keep an eye on the MLTwitter Tracker for this one.

Everybody Agrees, Midtown Pizza Sucks: I won't even pretend to be smart enough to understand anything about this New York Pizza report put together by statistics consultant and Columbia Grad student Jared Lander. But there is one thing that was pretty clear: average people think the pizza in Midtown sucks... and I'm pretty sure the experts agree.

E-Mo Kimbap by Your Surrogate Korean Auntie

With standing room only and walls the color of your bright yellow pickled daikon, E-Mo (W.32nd St. btw. 5th Ave and B’way), which means “aunt” in Korean, serves up homestyle, made-to-order kimbap from a tiny storefront in Koreatown. E-Mo is by far the most popular place to get “Korean sushi” in Ktown. A cheap, hole-in-the-wall, you’d think it would be a Midtown Lunch classic, but surprisingly hasn’t had its own coverage… ’til now. And come on Zach, it’s secretly a caloric brick.

Newly Open Vic’s Bagel Bar Is Like The Cold Stone Creamery Of Bagel Shops

Vic's Bagel Bar

I just grabbed breakfast from the Dag Hammarskjold farmers market this morning (on 47th and 2nd) when I passed by the newly opened Vic’s Bagel Bar (on 3rd Ave. btw. 36+37th). I love bagels, and can’t walk past a “Grand Opening” banner without wondering what I’m missing, so I snuck into the Pinkberry’ish looking space to grab a menu. It turns out they will freshly smash strawberries or olives or scallions, etc. into cream cheese right in front of you! (Cold Stone creamery anybody?) I’ll be heading back later to try their signatures, like the $6.50 (eek.) “Backyard BBQ bagel” which includes corn, cheddar, BBQ sauce, and red onion in cream cheese on whatever bagel you want. I”m pretty sure Zach would have hated this flavored cream cheese crap (he’s a bagel purist), but if it tastes awesome then I say long live Vic’s!

Check out the menu of mix-in monstrosities, after the jump.

Kyochon is Back Open (And It’s “Fantastique”)

After closing for retraining on Thursday, Kyochon (on 5th btw. 32+33rd) is back open and the blog DelicatesseNY stopped by for a take out lunch the other day. Sadly the post is written in French, but we popped it into Google Translate and let the hilarity ensue!  It sounds as if the wings are still super small, but Stephanie seemed to enjoy them anyway.  She also seemed to be saying (and, granted we’re just going from google translate here) that Midtown Lunchers are hard to please, and not everybody wants to eat a whole chicken during lunch for under $10.  Also, Kyochon is fantastic and she will definitely be back.  Maybe the retraining worked? (Take that early haters!)
