Japanese Restaurant Week Started Yesterday: Japan Week will return March 6-8, bringing Japanese food, exhibits and performances back to Grand Central's Vanderbuilt Hall. In the meantime, Japanese Restaurant Week 2014 begins this week. Restaurants all over the city are participating, including Midtown Lunch favorites Go! Go! Curry! and Sunrise Mart. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Tokyo Station, several restaurants will create food inspired by what was popular in 1914, while others will focus on food from other Japanese regions.

Flatiron Lunch: Kati Roll has Competition From Roomali

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Since learning about rumali (or roomali) rotis during my trip to India, I have been meaning to try out Roomali in Curry Hill. In case you were wondering, the name rumali roti translates to “handkerchief roti” because they are as thin as a, you guessed it,  handkerchief. Unlike naan, which is put in an clay oven, rumali rotis are tossed like pizza dough and cooked briefly on a dome heated from inside. Notably, Roomali doesn’t serve their rolls in rumali rotis. Strange, I know.

Video Break: Looking for Valentine’s Day Love at La Maison du Chocolat

We’re all looking for a little love, so for Valentine’s Day this year, I thought I’d impress a lucky girl with some luxurious hot chocolate at fancy Rockefeller Center shop La Maison du Chocolat. After taking out a personal ad looking for a date, I was excited that I got a response. The love (and chocolate) fest is all captured on video after the jump. Unfortunately, it didn’t go exactly according to plan…

Your First Look at Untamed’s New Larger Sandwiches

Please excuse my lousy Photoshop job.

Our review of Untamed Sandwiches generated quite a bit of controversy. Many readers believed Untamed Sandwiches was charging too much for a sandwich that was just too small. This was something I touched on repeatedly in my review, and it was a hard fact to ignore when looking at Untamed as a daily lunch spot. It was so prevalent, in fact, that Eater’s very own Mr. Sietsema pointed out the high price and small quantity conundrum in his own review. At the bottom of that post, Andy, from Untamed Sandwiches commented to say that Untamed had responded to us the critics, and upgraded the size of their sandwiches accordingly (it was pointed out here). This meant I had to abandon my lunch plans for the day, and get to Untamed Sandwiches to see what sort of changes had been made.

Hibachi Heaven Expands with Deli Heaven

hY2BA_A7Katz n Dogz is no longer the only delicatessen truck on the streets. Today on Twitter, Hibachi Heaven announced they’d be launching a new truck called Deli Heaven. From the Twitter account, the truck promises to serve rotisserie chicken, pastrami, corned beef, and NY-style sandwiches. They should be set up on Broadway and 55th Street for their Grand Opening right now. Early adopters, let us know how it is.

Another Shake Shack Is Coming To Midtown: Hey Midtown, looks like we're getting another Shake Shack! According to the New York Post, the new, large location will open in the fall at 600 Third Avenue (at 40th street). Eater reports it will go into the former Qdoba spot. Now that's a delicious trade for Midtown East!

Untamed Increases the Size of Their Sandwiches

On Eater today Robert Sietsema weighs in on Untamed Sandwiches, the braised meats sandwich place we told you about a few weeks ago on 39th btw. 5+6th.  But even more interesting than his opinions was the comment the post generated from somebody at Untamed.  Apparently over the weekend they increased the size of their sandwiches to the point where there’s “no way you will still think that our sandwiches are too small.”  We’ll be the judge of that…

Flatiron Lunch: The West Flatiron Thai Options Continue with Rin Thai

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

I feel like I am on a Thai food goose chase around 23rd Street and 7th and 8th Avenues organized by FL’er Stevenp. First, I was sent to Regional and M Thai after my own lackluster experience at Pongsri. Then, Rin Thai was recommended.

UPDATED: Kati Junction is Now Open in the Old Labeleca Space

Not sure how long ago Labeleca Pizza (on 40th & 7th) closed down but Lunch’er “FoodGoesInHere” just checked in with an update on the space…

Thought this was worth sharing. Just this morning I noticed a new place called ‘Kati Junction’ on west 40th between 7th and 8th, right next to Maoz Vegetarian (in the space where Labeleca Pizza used to be) that is currently under construction. The sign is up and there is a ‘grand opening’ banner outside, but no other details about when they will be open. They don’t appear to have any online presence other than an entry in Yellowpages.com, and even that offers no details aside from the address. (Also not to be confused with ‘Kathi Junction’, a mega-franchise in India.)

UPDATE: Apparently Kati Junction is now open.  Check out the menu after the jump…
