At Lunch Now: Do You Think Midtown East is Ready For Some Fast Casual Thai Food?

Newly Open Dee Daa Thai (on 44th btw. Lex+3rd), Today at 12:48pm

Answer = Yes.

PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “John”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s John, a media relations exec who hates boiled zucchini.

Name: John

Age: 47

Occupation: Media relations executive

Where in Midtown do you Work?: Goodman Media, 7th Ave between 49th and 50th

Favorite Kind of Food: Turkish, with Italian, German, and Japanese as close seconds. Dim sum, especially chive buns and chicken feet. And – don’t laugh – I love English food.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Boiled zucchini – I mean, why would anyone do this to zucchini? I will eat anything else, including worms (actually beetle larvae), which I’ve had a few times, notably in Mexico on a tortilla with onions and peppers. It was good, but also had a taste reminiscent of putting your tongue on an open light socket.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Hallo Berlin Express on 9th and 50th – “The Freakin’ Deal”, choice of one wurst, one German meatball, potatoes, red cabbage and winekraut, $9.00. Margon (on 46th btw 6+7th), Cuban Sandwich $6. I love Margon’s ‘hole-in-the-wall’ size and even the crowded atmosphere. I’ve been a customer of Hallo Berlin since Rolf Babiel first founded the Vendy-winning cart on 54th and 5th in the mid-80s. I ate there maybe twice a week when I worked at NBC and as often as possible when I didn’t. I was very saddened when he passed away last year. I’m really happy that his family is keeping the restaurant on 9th and the beer garden on 10th going.

Dee Daa Balanced Thai Opening Today

East side lunchers, your long wait for a new Thai option is over! We just got word that Dee Daa Thai is opening today (on 44th btw. Lex+3rd.) Finally we get to see what exactly “balanced Thai” means. Here’s a look at the menu, early adopters let us know how it is in the comments.

ChaPa’s Banh Mi is Decent But Far From Perfect

ChaPas Banh Mi

Is there such thing as the perfect sandwich? Perfection is subjective, but a proper bánh mì comes close to that lofty moniker in my opinion. In the pursuit of a good bánh mì in Midtown, we’ve tried fancy versions, we’ve tried bad versions, we’ve tried vegetarian versions, we’ve tried chain restaurant versions, and now we’ve finally tried the version at the newly opened ChaPa’s Noodle and Grill (on 52nd btw. 8+9th).

Pure Thai Shophouse is Now Serving Khao Soi

Pure Thai Shophouse FrontIs it possible to have too much of a good thing? Perhaps – but when it comes to Midtown lunches and good Thai food, I say go for the gusto. During my rave first look of Pure Thai Shophouse, luncher wayne inquired if they served khao soi, and I shared his admiration for the dish (at the time, they were not). However I recently stopped by Pure Thai for lunch, and noticed that they are now serving khao soi as a rotating daily special. Pure Thai has quickly become one of my favorite Thai joints in the city, and khao soi is easily my favorite dish in any Thai repertoire. As it turns out, too much of a good thing, is a great thing.

Biryani Cart Finally Adds a Paneer Roll to Their Lineup

Biryani Cart

My very first kati roll experience was at Kati Roll Co (the EV branch, sorry Midtown kids). My friend encouraged me to order their Achari Paneer roll, a spicy vegetarian roll filled with onions and paneer, a simple Indian cheese, topped with plenty of hot sauce. It was love at first bite. I’ve long hoped that Biryani Cart, my go to midtown kati roll spot, would add a paneer roll to the menu, so I was pretty excited to hear that last week they finally did. Read more »
