Speaker Quinn Gives Hope to Street Vendors

Coming shortly after the announcement that Bloomberg wants to launch a team of lawyers to hunt down food vendors with unpaid fines, we finally get some hopeful news on the food cart front. Last night City Council Speaker (and mayoral hopeful) Christine Quinn announced that on Wednesday she will be calling for a vote on the bills that the Street Vendor Project have been proposing for almost a year now. I guess she read the signs. The bills would lower the vendor fines from an unmanageable $1000 to a fee that vendors will actually be able to pay.

This is great news for street food vendors (and those of us who like to eat what they’re selling). But Gothamist reported that Mayor Mike (twirling his evil moustache) has proclaimed that lowering the fines is “one of the stupidest things I’ve heard.” He is threatening to veto the bill. Sean Basinski, from the SVP, believes the bills will have the full support of City Council and that they can hopefully over-ride the potential veto.

After Major Repairs The Cinnamon Snail Truck is Back

cinnamon snail

The 2012 People’s Choice Vendy Winner The Cinnamon Snail Truck is back on the road after a couple weeks off for repairs. Among other things the truck got a new engine and transmission. Besides the lost days on the road, those fixes add up to a whole lot of doughnuts. For their second day back they’ll be hitting their Friday midtown spot on 47th and Park and will be bringing some super special treats (homemade Peppermint Patties, maple pecan Rice Krispie Treats, white chocolate cream filled twinkies, and espresso chocolate twinkies) along with their winter menu which has some seasonal items totally worth checking out. Flatiron Lunch: Gyro King brings Street Meat off the Street

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

When I first spotted Gyro King, I was convinced that it would be legit. I am not sure exactly what that meant, but I vaguely had in mind a sublime doner kebab sandwich from London. Even with the differences in gyros and doner kebabs, I was hopeful for something amazing. I think the fact that Gyro King is set down off the street, but still has the feel of a cart furthered my anticipation. I was excited.

Urgent Flatiron News: Num Pang Flagship is Open!

We thought we posted this yesterday, but because of a glitch you may not have seen it so…

After several months of checking in almost weekly to see if they had opened yet (it was supposed to be Winter 2012), UltraClay delivered the wonderful news that Flatiron Num Pang has opened!! The folks over at Experience NoMad posted a preview of the space earlier this week, as did Mad Park News.

I stopped by last on Wednesday night to see it for my own eyes, and it is spacious and beautiful (old subway tile, etc) and has a ton of new menu options.

30% Off BonChon Chicken: Korean fried chicken fans, take note: Google Offers has a 30% off BonChon Chicken deal today for the Midtown location on 2nd avenue between 50th and 51st streets. Read the details carefully -- you can't use the coupon on specials or on Fridays, which is kind of random. But 30% off at BonChon means that some of those non-lunch special entrees can be affordable! Although, generally speaking, we recommend you stick to the chicken.

A Quick Look at the Bryant Park Malaysian Winter Market

Outside

When I arrived at the two-day Malaysian Winter Market on the 6th Avenue side of Bryant Park yesterday, it felt as packed as I hear those Malaysian markets get. Everyone was definitely there for the food (and shelter from the wind) and you could see from the lines which places everyone thought would be worth it. But instead of hopping blindly on a line, I scoped out the offerings a bit to try to make my best Midtown Lunch determination of what’s worth going back for today.

Schnitzel & Things is Packing Up Shop and Moving to Brooklyn

Schnitzel & ThingsSchnitzel & Things

If you wanted to try the bratwurst or the side sampler from Schnitzel & Things (on 3rd btw. 45+46th) that we wrote about yesterday, it’s going to have to be today or tomorrow.  We got this sad news from S&T’s owner Oleg last night:

Unfortunately Friday will be our last operational day at the restaurant. We are closing it done with much sadness but also with hope. We are moving to a kitchen in Red Hook and plan to reopen a retail store in the near future.  The truck will continue to operate as usual, and we feel we feel bad for the regular customers who come see us religiously at this location so we promise to try to bring the truck to the area for the customers that will be saddened by this news. I don’t want this to be a pity thing. We tried hard to make this a success.

Guy Fieri Forgets to Register Domain – Internet to the Rescue!

Presented without comment in the ongoing Guy Fieri culture wars, it looks like someone forgot to register the domain name for his restaurant. An enterprising soul has taken the liberty of doing so and posting a somewhat subtle revision of the normal menu from the Times Square donkey sauce source. I don’t know about you guys, but I’d pay real American dollars for “special jalapeno sugarbrew” as a condiment. Wherever you stand on the Flavortown debate, it’s worth a read for use of the phrase “hamburger-fisted pig skins” alone, doubly so if they’re “served drunk and on fire.”
