PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Maria”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch: Downtown, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Maria who’s a real estate agent and resident of Battery Park City. She’ll point you in the direction of her favorite brick oven pizza and wants to know your restaurant ideas.

Name: Maria Hadjidemetriou

Occupation: Passionate real estate sales agent

Where you work: Mainly Battery Park City

Age: Fabulously 40

Favorite kinds of food: Vietnamese, and amazing brick oven pizza

Least favorite foods: Hot dogs and hamburgers

Favorite lunches downtown: Inatteso Pizzabar Casano on West. St. (at Morris) for brick oven pizza “Parma” which has prosciutto and arugula; Mangez Avec Moi on W. Broadway (btw. Murray & Warren) for tom yum soup; Souvlaki GR truck (normally at Old Slip & Front) for kolokithokeftedes (Greek meatballs) and the pork souvlaki in pita with tzatziki.

Takahachi Bakery Is A Great Source Of Inventive, Cheap Sandwiches

It seems it’s been two whole years since I’ve written about Takahachi Bakery which sits quietly on Murray St. (at Church) baking up all kinds of Japanese-inflected goods both sweet and savory. They also have sandwiches, salads and soup some of which I’ve already tried, but when I stopped in recently I was drawn to the hot case which has little lunch boxes containing a sandwich that’s heftier than it looks and a little side of some sort for $8.25. I was mighty pleased with the meaty, gingery beef concoction I grabbed. Read more »

Wafels & Dinges Is On The Bowery: It's pretty dead on the Twitter Tracker today, and it seems like everyone's headed anywhere other than work today. Those of you near the WFC lot have Valducci's, Rickshaw and Gorilla Cheese, Sweetery's at Hudson & King until noon, Bob & Jo are at Varick & King, and Wafels & Dinges is at Bowery & Grand. Calexico is out at Prince & Wooster with shredded brisket as a special.

Alif Deli Quietly Peddles $1 Pizza Slices

2012-11-20 14.46.08

The section of Broadway on the fringe of Tribeca has two options for $1 pizza slices – Roll And Go (at Franklin, and Canal & W. B’way) and Joey’s Pepperoni Pizza (at White)- but did you know there’s another option? Alif Deli & Salad Bar on Church St. (Thomas & Duane) has a sign outside proclaiming there are 99 cent slices within or you can get toppings for extra. And you can get a whole cheese pizza for $8 (or is that $9? Red lettering on a tan background should be outlawed). Maybe it’s time for another cheap slice comparison.

Milk Truck Has Returned To The FiDi: It seems like it's the last day to catch some of the mobile food vendors this week before Thanksgiving, and the Twitter Tracker shows Palenque, Eddie's Pizza and Phil's Steaks at the WFC lot, and Milk Truck's back at Wall & William. Korilla's at Varick & Vandam and Rickshaw is at Hudson & King.
