The $5 Lunch Truck Is Now The $5.50 Lunch Truck

Another day, another place raises its prices. This time it’s the beloved (at least by me) $5 Lunch Truck run by the amiable Kiflu, which is now charging $5.50 for its deliciousness. I spotted the familiar signboard guy at his spot on Fulton & Nassau and noticed the price hike. With food costs up (including lamb), it’s not surprising that we’re getting the costs passed along to us, and I for one will not be deterred from eating here by a 50 cent hike.

Milk St. Cafe Owner Says Kosher Food Hall On Verge Of Closure

milk st. front

Yesterday, we at Midtown Lunch: Downtown were alerted by an e-mail from a publicist that the situation at the giant kosher food hall Milk St. Cafe isn’t really any better than it was a few weeks ago when they had to lay off 21 staff members and news reports said they were hemorrhaging money. The blame was put squarely on the barricades put up on Wall St., and therefore in front of the restaurant, due to the Occupy Wall St. protests a couple of blocks up Broadway. They were taken down temporarily, but then put back up and owner Marc Epstein says that if the 30% drop in business doesn’t rebound, they’re going to have to close.

Mexicue is at Water & Broad, Souvlaki GR is at Old Slip along with Bongo Brothers, Kimchi Taco is at Hudson & Charlton and Calexico's Prince St. cart is out.

Dirt Cheap Soups At A-Pou’s Taste Are Worth A Look

Having eaten everything else on the short menu of Taiwanese dumplings and Chinese spaghetti at A-Pou’s Taste cart on Liberty (at Broadway), I decided on a rainy day that it was time to try their soups. There’s hot and sour and corn chowder on offer for the low, low price of $2 for a small and $3 for a large. Even if the soup ended up not being amazing, I figured at least I wouldn’t be spending a lot of money to find that out. Read more »

ML Downtown Mailbag: Toloache Raised Prices On Taco And Burrito Specials

A couple of Lunch’ers wrote in yesterday to tell us that the prices of the Tuesday and Friday specials on tacos and burritos at Toloache Taqueria on Maiden Lane (btw. William & Gold) were each raised $1 to $3 per taco and $7 per burrito. Lunch’er Eric had this to say:

Toloache finally gave in and had to raise the prices on their Tuesday and Friday specials.  A $7 Friday burrito is still a good deal there, even at a buck higher than last week.  They did expand their menu a bit.  The Carne Asada tacos are worth it.

Lunch’er Chloe also stopped in for the Tuesday taco special and discovered the price raise. They were nice enough to give it to her for $2, and she was nice enough to pass along the updated menu which you can find (in part) after the jump.
