Tien Ho is Our Vote For Best New Chef

Food and Wine Magazine has added a people’s choice award to this year’s Best New Chef competition, and we can’t help but want Ma Peche’s Tien Ho to win for New York City (Midtown represent!) Sure the restaurant is fancy pants, but he did give us a menu of take out $10 Midtown Lunch Specials. If we help him win, maybe other fancy Midtown restaurants will follow suit. Vote now>>

Midtown Kati Krawl Yields Definitive Winner

biryani kati rolls 2

When you’re the food blogger in the family you often get co-opted into the food decider role–the person in charge of picking the food outing that the whole family will enjoy. I love introducing people to new foods, but still it comes with a good bit of pressure. Months ago I introduced my husband’s aunt to kati rolls and she’s been raving about them ever since. With my husband’s mother, brother and sister in town it was clear that kati rolls would be on tap and with so many eager eaters it seemed an apt opportunity to embark on a kati krawl. Read more »

Next Week Married Dudes Get Up to 30% Off at Midtown Hooters

Hooters celebrating marriage! What alternate universe is this? Apparently with a marriage certificate and this ad you can get up to 30% off your bill at Hooters. It’s only good next week, and strangely enough it’s only for husbands (What? Married wives don’t like discounted buffalo wings!?) No fine print claims you need to… umm… actually bring your spouse (just proof that she exists), so have at it boys!

eHow’s Guide to Starting a Food Truck in NYC is Complete Garbage

Over the past year there have been countless articles and blog posts and tv segments dedicated to helping entrepreneurs take advantage of the food truck explosion that has been going on lately.  But the latest entry, courtesy of eHow is quite possibly the worst I’ve ever seen.  I probably shouldn’t get so mad, but crap like this is the reason why so many food trucks operators get blindsided by what they didn’t know about running a mobile food business. The eye rolling starts on suggestion #2:

“Follow New York’s licensing and permit requirements to the letter and avoid obtaining a permit on the black market”

And how exactly do you propose to do that?

Chipotle Gearing Up For “ShopHouse” Launch: "Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. has registered the name ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, leading an analyst to speculate what the chain has planned for its new fast-casual Asian concept." Wonder how Pure Thai Shophouse feels about that? Probably the same way Kogi felt about Baja Fresh. [NRN via Eater]

Salt & Pepper Closes, And a Little Part of Me Has Died

Salt & Pepper Closes I’m pretty devastated to discover that Salt & Pepper (on 33rd btw. 6+7th), one of my favorite lunch spots in Midtown, has closed. This was the place where you could get a large platter of rice, beans and stewed chicken or rice, lentils and stewed tripe or awesome Indian food for just $7. When I walked by there was no note, but I took a peek inside and the place looked totally gutted except for the counter where they used to have all their deliciousness laid out. *Sigh” I really hope they’re just doing some major renovations. Does anyone know what happened?
