Kolette’s Extra: Best Chocolate Rugelach in Midtown?

Chocolate Rugelach

Forgot to mention this in my chicken shawarma sandwich post about Kolette’s (on Lex. btw. 55+56th)- which was actually just a pre-game! My intial Kolette’s Kitchen curiosity was piqued by this mention of their chocolate and cinnamon rugelach in the forums last week. As a person who would prefer taking a long lunch and heading up to Greenberg’s rather than eat most of Midtown’s rugelach offerings, this allegation had to be investigated.

One look tells you these rugelach are hand-made. Each is unique in form, and that form is packed with chocolate goodness. They’re not made fresh on site, but the soft doughy insides let me know that they weren’t sitting around all that long. I like the addition of cinnamon, it’s just enough to play off the chocolate and makes the rugelach seem a little exotic. I haven’t run across many with that flavor combination at all. At 75¢ a pop, these make a nice little mid-afternoon dessert snack.

Half Off Hello Pasta: If you haven't signed up for the Gilt NYC email, here's a decent enough reason... Today deal is a two lunches for the price of one coupon for Hello Pasta. They also had a half off Frites N Meats deal, but it's already sold out. (There is a "wait list", whatever that means.)

PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Amanda”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week we throw the Flatiron Lunchers a bone by profiling Amanda, a legal assistant who loves garbage plates but doesn’t eat bacon.

Name: Amanda

Age: 26

Occupation: Legal Assistant

Where in Midtown do you Work?: NY Life Building, 27th and Park ave

Favorite Kind of Food: Potatoes! Veggies! Anything with Curry or Garlic.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: There really isn’t anything I won’t eat, except bacon (blasphemy according to all these foodie blogs) and pickles (the smell gets me.)

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Eisenberg’s Tuna Melt with Egg Cream (on 22nd & 5th Ave.) La Posada’s Ground Beef Burrito (on 3rd btw. 26+27th.) It’s so big they automatically give you a fork and knife to attack it. Dosi Truck Kati Rolls on 27th and 5th (4 dollars!!). Rafiqi’s on 24th for their gyro with everything (only this cart! The guys are very nice and the veggies are cut up fresh for the salad). Mozzarelli’s (on 23rd btw. B’way+Park)-anything they have. Gluten Free options? I’m down! Chicken Deli on 28th-amazing breakfast options, but I LOVE their fresh sushi and chicken salad with raisins and walnuts. Curry in a Hurry (on Lex btw. 28+29th)-again almost everything they have. I go here if I want leftovers for dinner and lunch the next day as well.

Kolette’s Kitchen Pushes the Banh Mi Boundaries With Chicken Shawarma

Kolette's KitchenI’ve been curious about the kosher banh mi sandwiches at Kolette’s Kitchen (on Lex btw 55+56th) since Amy told us that the Classic wasn’t half bad. Well, if they could do a respectable kosher (aka no pork) version of our beloved banh mi, what about this other hybrid sandwich we heard about, the Chicken Shawarma Banh Mi? What is that all about? Spicy, chicken deliciousness apparently!

“Meals on Wheels” Pops Up on 49th; Fried Chicken Cart Adds Spaghetti & Meatballs

Meals on Wheels Cart

I noticed a couple of new developments in the world of food carts during a little Midtown wandering yesterday. First off, a new halal cart has entered into the Midtown fray on the NW corner of 49th and Park Ave, directly across from our friends at El Rey del Sabor. The cart, Meals on Wheels, apparently set up shop there two weeks ago, and are pricing their chicken and rice platters at $3.99. Added bonus: the interior still has that “new cart” shine.

Woorijip Serves Spaghetti & Meatballs?!: We love Woorijip, the Korean take out spot on 32nd btw. B'way+5th, but not everything at Woorijip is loved. For example, as obvious as this sounds in retrospect, don't bother with their version of spaghetti and meatballs.

Istanbul Kebab House Is Now Open

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that a kebab place was opening just out of bounds on the Westside, but now it’s official! Commenter “Copyboy” writes in his first impression:

It’s a little out of bounds but the only gyro stack in the area that I’m aware of has just arrived at 9th ave. near 48th St., a couple doors down from Bai Cha. The place actually has two stacks – one chicken, one lamb – and they are are obviously chunks of meat, not ground-up mystery meat splamb. When I arrived at 2 pm the chef told me with regret that they’d just run out of bread. He offered to make a gyro wrap, but the thought filled me with dread. A gyro platter ($8.50) at lunch would put me to sleep, so I’ll investigate further another day. The gyro sandwich is priced at $5.99 and there’s a full range of typical Turkish meat dishes and salads. The place is clean and looks great. The menu describes gyro thus: “Layers of marinated ground meat, wrapped around the large vertical split and grilled in front on an ingenious herd of charcoal fire.” It’s actually NOT ground meat, but I have no doubt it is an ingenious herd.

No ground up mystery meat? Well that’s no fun! I’ll indeed have to check this out!

For a Chinglish Alternative to SG, Try Evergreen on 38’s Beef Tenders

evergreen38-001

Even though Szechuan Gourmet is the ace-in-the-hole for spice loving ML eaters who work around 39th street, there are still other options in the area. And not just Zaiya and the rest of the Japanese food corridor on 41st street. I’m talking Chinese food options. We’ve already seen Lan Seng join the scene last year. But there’s actuallya restaurant on 38th street, just a block away, that’s been doing business for a while. I’ve always walked by Evergreen on 38 and dismissed it because it looked like just another Chinese take-out place. I think they used to have another branch of the restaurant by the NYU campus, but it’s been long gone. If the 38th street location can stay open, then maybe it’s half decent? Last week I thought it was good time to give Evergreen’s lunch specials menu a shot.
