PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Amanda”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week we throw the Flatiron Lunchers a bone by profiling Amanda, a legal assistant who loves garbage plates but doesn’t eat bacon.

Name: Amanda

Age: 26

Occupation: Legal Assistant

Where in Midtown do you Work?: NY Life Building, 27th and Park ave

Favorite Kind of Food: Potatoes! Veggies! Anything with Curry or Garlic.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: There really isn’t anything I won’t eat, except bacon (blasphemy according to all these foodie blogs) and pickles (the smell gets me.)

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Eisenberg’s Tuna Melt with Egg Cream (on 22nd & 5th Ave.) La Posada’s Ground Beef Burrito (on 3rd btw. 26+27th.) It’s so big they automatically give you a fork and knife to attack it. Dosi Truck Kati Rolls on 27th and 5th (4 dollars!!). Rafiqi’s on 24th for their gyro with everything (only this cart! The guys are very nice and the veggies are cut up fresh for the salad). Mozzarelli’s (on 23rd btw. B’way+Park)-anything they have. Gluten Free options? I’m down! Chicken Deli on 28th-amazing breakfast options, but I LOVE their fresh sushi and chicken salad with raisins and walnuts. Curry in a Hurry (on Lex btw. 28+29th)-again almost everything they have. I go here if I want leftovers for dinner and lunch the next day as well.

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Rodeo Bar (3rd btw. 26+27th) for their 8 dollar Burger and Draft Beer Special. Pretty good burgers, and for the price-would we complain? Probably not.

Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? Baoguette. It’s a few steps down off the sidewalk, and easy to miss. Now it’s a frequent stop for lunch. Catfish sandwich anyone?

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? I love where I am now cause of all the options and prices. But if anywhere in the world…I hear Toronto has insane street hot dogs that apparently blow anything here out of the water.

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? Garbage Plates?! Where the heck can I get these…I have heard rumours of places offering them, but I have yet to discover any. For those not in the know…check this out. I miss these from when I lived in Rochester…they look disgusting-but taste so good, whether you are sober or inebriated.

Got an answer for Amanda? Put in the comments. And, as always, if you want to be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email editor@midtownlunch.com.

  • I live right where you work. There are no garbage plates in our area as far as I know. I haven’t heard of them being served anywhere in the City.

  • WTH is a garbage plate…O_O

  • I’ve had garbage plates multiple times up in the Rochester area, and I will be very happy to never have it again. They’re wonderful in theory, but they’re so greasy that they always feels like they’re congealing in my intestines (which it probably is).

  • I can see myself sharing a Garbage plate, has everything I like in 1 plate!!

Thanks for all those lunch spots, I need to explore more the east side.

  • Yeah. I had them around syracuse. That’s an upstate NY thing–not a NYC thing….

  • FREAK OF THE WEEK

    (the Nick Tahou forever edition)

  • Hasn’t The Group decided that Little Morocco is a little garbage-plate-esque? What with the smattering of beans and other goodies placed amidst your street meat?

    • garbage plate esque is not what i want…i want garbage plate rochester style!! anything from a cart is close…but it doesnt have zweigle hot dogs or the meat sauce….

  • i miss working in that building.

  • garbage plates are like grease truck sandwiches

  • yessss…garbage plates ftw!

honestly, it’s probably best to just make ’em at home…b/c nyc does not have any righteous representation of a proper plate.

daddy-o in the west village claimed to have one…but it was pretty horrible.

oh, and it was all about sinbad’s as well in the crotch.

  • SOMEBODY start a garbage plates truck/ cart for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They will make mad loot in our fatass city. ;P

  • that has been a thought of mine. i actually have routes determined and the name and look of the truck. my plan is to try and make my own garbage plate soon and if it comes out good then go from there….

  • Garbage plates are disgusting. Nearly getting into a street fight whilst waiting for one is even worse. The best food in the Roch are the burgers they sell on the streets. Bombers from Campies are worth the lake effect snow as well.

The Hot Dogs in Toronto are NOT worth living there for. They have limited late-night options so a Chicago style dog seems like heaven to the average Leaf fan. It’s not.

  • Curry in a Hurry haha i always liked that name

  • I went to college near Rochester. I had my very first garbage plate experience as a freshman. I could barely eat half of it!

The “freshly baked” bread is literally served out of black garbage bags. You have to mix it altogether with ketchup and hot sauce- it’s the only way to get it all down safely. It’s all the rage in upstate NY but I don’t understand why!!
