Burrito Bliss At Calexico, If You Can Get Past The 30 Minute Wait

There has been much talk on how sub-par the burritos are in this city, with places like Chipotle drawing long lines with their weirdly flavored rice and dry meat. And then there’s Calexico, which has carved a niche for itself with its carts manned (and frequented) by hipsters, making California-style burritos. So far they have won a Vendy Award in 2008 and opened a brick and mortar store, yet they have never been graced by a Midtown Lunch review. I know those in Midtown got their hopes up that a cart was coming their way, but sadly that did not materialize. Downtown is a comparable wealth of Calexico riches with two carts in Soho, and I hit up the one on Broome St. (at Crosby) to see what all of the fuss was about. Read more »

Downtown Lunch: Mooncake Foods

Midtown workers shouldn’t have all the fun, so to even the score, I’ve brought on Daniel Krieger as an official Downtown Lunch Correspondent to write up some of the tasty stuff you can get in the lower half of Manhattan. He’s a great photographer (ensuring good food porn), but more importantly he is a lover of cheap, unique and delicious eats (or as I like to call it- Midtown Lunch’ish food.) I’ve heard mixed things about Mooncake Foods, which also has a just out of boundaries Midtown location (on 30th btw. 7+8th).  Some people swear by their typical-diner-food-with-an-Asian-twist, but I’ve always been slightly skeptical that it was overpriced and would just leave me wanting some straight up Asian food. Here’s Daniel’s take on the Downtown location.

Mooncake Foods

Mooncake Foods has inventive, tasty food at a reasonable price. I checked out the downtown location of this small restaurant this week with a friend and was impressed with my Anise & Beer Braised Beef Shins plate, served with soft tortillas. A huge pile of tender beef is slapped onto a bed of greens and it comes with a cup of jus.

Downtown Lunch: La Nueva Conquista Restaurant

Downtown Lunch: La Nueva Restaurant

La Nueva Conquista Restaurant has been in the same spot for 50 years and although ownership has changed hands over that time, the food and atmosphere have stayed pretty much the same. And almost as important, the prices have held steady as well.

Located on Lafayette street near the corner of Broome, you will find a long ass line during lunchtime containing mostly a latino population. When I first moved to NYC I lived in Washington Heights for 4 years and got quite sick of eating the same food all the time, as back then there wasn’t much variety uptown (not sure how much the hood has changed since I left). On occasion though, I get that craving of a hearty meal of yellow rice and beans; the kinda lunch that sticks to your ribs.

Downtown Lunch: Lahore Pakistani Fast Food

Midtown workers shouldn’t have all the fun, so to even the score, I’ve brought on Daniel Krieger as an official Downtown Lunch Correspondent to write up some of the tasty stuff you can get in the lower half of Manhattan. This week, I’m particularly curious about this Pakistani “Hamburger”

Downtown Lunch: Lahore

If you’re walking up Crosby to Houston and you blink, you’ll miss Lahore, where according to the take out menu you can, “Feel the taste of East.” Personally I feel like their name and slogan may have gotten mixed up with a shady massage parlor, but I went in anyway on the recommendation of a friend who frequents this Pakistani Cabbie Stand.
