So it’s Tuesday… which means I turn over the site to a Midtown Lunch’er for their recommendations of places to eat in Midtown. This week, it’s Dan- a Legal something or other, who is eagerly awaiting the opening of the new Sophie’s Cuban.

Where in Midtown do you Work?: Bond Traders on 58th & Park.

Favorite Kind of Food: Soup Dumplings.  If you’ve never had them, go to Chinatown and find out.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: The $8 Midtown Cold Cut sandwich. Make them wraps, and I like them even less.

Favorite Place to Eat Lunch in Midtown: La Strada (54th 56th btw 3rd and lex) is hands down the best place in my area. It started out as a pizza joint, but after the owners started bringing in their homemade Latin food that’s all people get. The homemade food is so good the one pizza pie is shoved to the back and hardly ever moves. You get 2 sides and a main course for $6.00. My combo is the chicken stew w/ rice, fresh vegetables and maduros (sweet fried plantains). Just get there early if you want maduros.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Our subsidized company café. Horrible food for really cheap. Of course we do get subsidized Hale and Hearty Soup.

Place you discovered on MidtownLunch.com: Daisy May’s BBQ cart. We need more BBQ places up here. Also, Sophie’s Cuban. It better be open this Friday like you promised.

What would be your dream job location for Lunch purposes? New Orleans. The great thing about New Orleans is that nothing is healthy, so you can just throw your hands up in the air and eat whatever you want.

Where in Midtown do you Work?: Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center on 53rd and 3rd. 

Favorite Kind of Food: Japanese & Mexican.  I’m also a big fan of fresh bread and cookies.  Surprisingly Pax has really good sandwich bread.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: A salad gone wrong, or overpriced food (even the muffins are expensive at Cafe Europa)

Favorite Place to Eat Lunch in Midtown: This is a hard one.  For a late lunch/early evening buzz I head over to Blockheads on 3rd for $3.50 margaritas and a delicious burrito.  The crowd is younger and it’s mostly women and couples.  A nice escape from boys in their twenties looking to hit on a helpless blonde at a Friday happy hour.  The wraps are also good, and the place is so small it’s hard to be neglected.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: 53rd St. Gourmet.  I go for the cookies and fruit cup.  The Cobb Salad is pretty decent too.

Place you discovered on MidtownLunch.com: Oms/b.  You are not kidding about this place.  Believe the hype.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why?  Chinatown, so I could eat Shanghai’s soupy dumplings every day of the week (on Mott St.)  I would also love to work in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, so I could go to SkinFlintz for a burger (served on an English muffin), Mona Lisa for delicious panini, and Magic David (For Hamilton Pkwy) for mozzarella sticks.

Anything else you’d like to say to or ask the Midtown Lunch readers? I’m waiting for the Sophie’s Cuban review!  I’ve heard their food is pretty authentic.  Also, where’s the review of PAX?  Their food does taste fresher.  I had a fresh mozzarella and chicken sandwich with arugula and it was surprisingly tasty!

Sorry Kristy… but I’m pretty sure you’ve blown up your Blockheads spot.  My prediction… this Friday, Blockheads will be packed with “boys in their twenties looking to hit on a helpless blonde at a Friday happy hour”.  Well done.

Favorite Kind of Food: Chinese & Mexican

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Fast food… mainly McDonald’s and KFC, and although I love Mexican food, Chipotle keeps disappointing me every time, all over again, without even a single exception.  No more chances to be given! (Yeah right…)  (Editor’s Note:  I’m actually attempting to not eat at Chipotle for an entire year… we’ll see how that goes.)

Favorite Place to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Well, that’s mostly a matter of budget.  If I am footing the bill, than Minar.  The meat and chicken combo with extra Naan and yogurt sauce- running to the crown slightly ahead of Burritoville’s BBQ burritos.  If it’s my boss’ expense account we’re dealing with, than probably nothing can beat the $50 steaks at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse or Del Frisco’s just across the street.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Hing Won on 48th btw. 5&6th.  Although we go there too often, the large variety of Chinese dishes and Szechwan soups enables us to re-select it all over again without getting bored.

Place you discovered on MidtownLunch.com: Kati Roll.  It’s undoubtedly a great Indian combination, but still a bit too fatty for my taste.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Midtown Hong Kong.  I hear amazing stories about the culinary wonders of the city, regardless of the specific location within the city, especially when it comes to unique Chinese and far east delights, which I like alot.

Anything else you’d like to say to or ask the Midtown Lunch readers? Although it’s sometimes fun to complain how there is not enough Korean places, or good Thai joints around upper Midtown, NYC is still most likely the best place in the world in terms of variety of excellent and moderately priced restaurants that can fit any taste and preference.  We are very lucky to be “lunch’ing” here.  NYC Rules.  Period.

Well said Lior.  Although I’m still questioning your choice of pictures…  are you sure you wouldn’t rather be eating lunch in San Fran?  They have a really good Chinatown…

Speaking of Chinese, your Profile reminded me I hadn’t been to Hing Won in awhile, so yesterday I decided to revisit it.  I know people have been asking me to branch out farther East, but considering the unknown gas issues plaguing Midtown yesterday, I decided to remain close to work.

Favorite Kind of Food: Well, it’s hard to say- but whenever I feel like ordering in it’s always Sushi or Thai… so maybe- Asian food?

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Black Licorice.  Is that a food?  I also hate fast food… but that’s not totally true.  I like french fries, and Popeyes, and Ranch 1.  I guess I just hate McDonalds.

Favorite Place to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Depends who’s paying.  If I am, than Menchanko-Tei.  The Hakata ramen is my favorite.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: It’s definitely Cafe Duke.  I always get the salad bar (and load up on the free bread in the bowl!)

Place you discovered on MidtownLunch.com: Kati Roll and Sapporo

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Anywhere there is not a giant Christmas tree.  If I had to choose a specific place to work it would be Bali so I could eat at yummy food carts for lunch (but I don’t want to say that because than people will move there and ruin it)

What did you ask Santa to bring Midtown Lunch in 2007? Hidden lunch spots that tourists don’t know about (and you don’t have to walk by any tourists to get there)… preferably a cheap Vietnamese place.

What did you ask Santa to bring Midtown Lunch in 2007? More Korean & Thai!  And preferably hole in the wall type places, but it’s Midtown- so I know that’s asking too much!

I agree on the whole Thai thing (especially since places like Yum Thai will probably be ruined for me by the food I’m eating right now in Thailand), but you’re 10 blocks away from Koreatown.  I feel no sympathy for you on the Korean tip.  (Mandoo bar was in your “goto” lunch places for god sake!)

Favorite Kind of Food: Bread.  Bagels, pumpernickel, toast, sourdough, pretzels, white, hot dog buns, potato, hearty Italian, wonder, baguette, pancakes and waffles.
 
Least Favorite Kind of Food: Mayonnaise

Favorite Place to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Utsav Indian Buffet on 46th btw. 6+7th.  It is more expensive ($15) than other Indian buffets, but well worth it.  They always have lamb korma, which is ground spicy lamb-kind of like sloppy joe’s, great naan, and TWO desserts! I love the carrot kulcha… it tastes like carrot cake.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Food World on 46th btw. 5th & Madison.  It is one of the everything under the sun places.  They do a good burrito, a nice salad bar, as well as the standard grill station.  The salad bar is $6.99, and you get 6 things (including 2 meats).  They also have many cheeses (blue and parmesan), spicy chicken, tuna, beats, eggs and much more with tasty dressings to compliment them.  I like the caesar.  The standout is the make your own Mongolian BBQ station, which is great.  They even have a flat screen TV out from so you can see all the food being made.  The big let down is the pasta bar.

Place you discovered on MidtownLunch.com: Margon.  Mmmmmm.  Cubanos/Dominicanos

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Here in New York City!  I’m tired of all these picks of the week bashing on this city.  I am a native New Yorker, born and raised.  This city has the most options of any city in the world, and they are all open late.  Try, just try to get Chinese food at 3am in D.C..  It is impossible and you will cry.  Here, no problem.  (Although I do wish I could get some good Texas Red Chili)

What did you ask Santa to bring Midtown Lunch in 2007? I asked Kwanza Karl to bring me a Gyro machine for the office and a half smoke from Ben’s Chili Bowl (Washington DC). Failing that, I would settle for a shorter line at Kati Roll and a real Scottish style Fish and Chips shop, where you can chase your scrod with a deep fried Mars Bar.

Anything else you’d like to ask our readers? Anybody know any good Ethiopian places?   Or picadillo, the Cuban style “Sloppy Joe’s” ground beef dish?  Or tamales?  I like the bodega on 14th & A, but it’s a shlep.

Where in Midtown do you Work?: 44th & 3rd

Favorite Kind of Food:  I’m an equal opportunity eater that enjoys most everything- but I’m especially fond of cheese enchiladas, cheeseburgers, and any food that’s green, red or orange.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Food that’s been sitting under a lamp for hours… and stuff made with MSG (I’m allergic)

Favorite Place to Eat Lunch in Midtown: If I had my druthers, I’d eat at Goodburger every day.  I always order a cheeseburger with mayo, lettuce, tomato and pickles with a side of fries, and extra mayo for dipping (I love mayo!)  Some people complain that the burger is too small, but for me it’s just right.  Before Goodburger opened we’d go to Blarney Stone, but I can’t eat a whole one of those without getting seriously ill.  I’m also a big fan of street meat.  There’s a cart I frequent on 45th & 3rd Ave. (across from Sparks Steakhouse) and no matter how many times I go I still have to beg for extra hot sauce.  The cart master always says “Are you sure?”, and I always reply “Yes, I’m a Texan!”  I’ve tried a lot of carts in the area and this one is the “safest” one.  No gastro-intestinal issues yet!

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Goodburger.  See above.

Place you discovered on MidtownLunch.com: Oms/b.  While I’d always known about this place (it’s across the street from my office), I never went there until I read your review.  Expensive, but tasty.  And the Japanese are so brilliant at packaging and presentation.  I’m never sure if I want to eat it, or just take a photo of it.  I’d also like to try the Mexican Cart with the Sombrero (even though it wasn’t a favorite of yours).  I was also hoping to go to the Diamond Dairy.  I love hidden away secret spots.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? )The Piedmonte Italy.  I spent a week there at the end of October and oh boy, the Italians know how to do lunch.  Nary a deli, salad bar, or American fast food chain to be found.  Instead we ate in restaurants and cafes where we were served these ludicrously long, multi-course meals all washed down with glasses of Proseco, Barbaresco, Barolo and Sauternes.  Not to mention the ubiquitous white truffles in autumn.  And after all that good eating, you get to take a nap!  The Italians know how to live…

What did you ask Santa to bring Midtown Lunch in 2007? I would die and go to heaven if Taco Cabana or Whataburger came to Midtown.  I read that Taco Cambana is now owned by a company based out of Albany, so it should be too difficult for them to open a Manhattan branch!!!  And why not more Shake Shacks?  Sure, I enjoy Goodburger, but if Shake Shack was in Midtown, I’d probably go there every day.  Sorry Goodburger, I like you a lot… but you’re no Shake Shack.

Anything else you’d like to say? I’ve gained 10 pounds since August, and I’ve been reading Midtown Lunch since August.  Coincidence?  I think not!  You should try and wrangle some sort of Midtown Lunch gym discount for your readers!

Good idea.  You hear that, Gold’s? Or Sports Club L.A.?  (Those are names of Gyms right?  I’m not positive since I’ve never stepped foot inside one of those places in my life…)

Favorite Kind of Food: Sushi, until I became Vegetarian. Still Asian food probably- Udon Noodle Soup, thai peanut sauces, Pad See Ew (wide noodles) and chinese eggplant. Plus anything Italian. I like noodles and rice and tofu alot.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Mexican. I used to work at Burritoville… no horror stories at all, they’re fantastic- but I burnt out on Mexican food in high school. Also, I don’t like Papaya very much. Smells like armpits to me.

Favorite Place to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Bunchberries on 53rd btw. 2nd & 3rd. Scallion pancakes and mac & cheese. And I hate to say it but I’ve been trying to bring lunch from home lately. (Editor’s Note: I usually will only go as far as 3rd Ave. But for a place that serves scallion pancakes and mac & cheese… I might be willing to go the extra half an avenue!)

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: I don’t really have one… but my boyfriend’s is Woorijip on 32nd St. btw. Broadway & 5th. They go there so much they’ve already collected enough stamps to get two aprons!

Place you discovered on MidtownLunch.com: Indian Cart on 53rd and Park, lots of noodle shops, and Ho Yip (actually, I might have found that myself, but you endorsed it)

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Scarily enough, I kind of loved working at 40th and 6th ave. There was a salad bar place Cranberries that made a million good things, and there were all these tolerable carts and pizza shops and soup places and such. If I picked my real favorite good lunch spot, it would be my natural supermarket Perelandra in Brooklyn Heights — I feel healthy just smelling the place. Or Houston Street / West Village. There’s a lot there…

Anything else you’d like to say? I’d like to thank everyone who helped me get this honor today. My ex-boss Patrick, for being so impossible to work with that I was lead to my true calling, and sent my ass temping around the city in the interim. Favorite Kind of Food: Hard to pin down just one, but probably rustic Italian when it’s done well.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Steak. I’ll probably get strung up for saying this, but a plain slab of meat has no appeal for me. Second least favorite is the $10 mediocre salad that dominates most midtown takeout places. How can lettuce cost that much?

Favorite Place to Eat Lunch in Midtown: The Jiannetto’s pizza truck on 51st and Park. One vodka slice and one regular makes a perfect lunch. Such salty tomato-ey goodness. And I enjoy asking co-workers “Who wants to hit da pizza truck wit me?” It’s a freaking truck. You’ve got to love that.  (Editor’s Note: When we first wrote about Jiannettos’ the truck on 51st just east of Park was out of commission.  It is now back, so there are two locations in Midtown again…)

The “goto” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Yip’s. We learned about it on this site, and since then we’ve been gorging ourselves on its brown-sauce treats about three times a week. We initiate new co-workers by taking them to Yip’s, having them ask for something not on the menu, then laugh when the counter guys throw them out of the line.

What is your Dream Job location for lunch purposes only?: Warren, Vermont. The Warren Store has some of the finest sandwiches on earth, the coffee is fantastic, and the baked goods in general are outstanding.

I understand how you feel about Yips Jim…  I have a cheap Chinese food obsession.  Some would call it an addiction.  As a matter of fact, I went to 52nd last Monday with the full intention of eating at the Bread Market Cafe (the Plantain stuffed burrito place) and ended up getting sidetracked by Yips- and their “new menu item”.  A picture of the new item, plus how you can be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er- after the jump…

This week, it’s Caitlin- a Real Estate Paralegal who loves Asian Food (and gravy… did you think I wouldn’t notice your comment yesterday?)  She also clued me in to what wiener really means…

Where in Midtown do you Work?: Grand Central Area

Favorite Kind of Food:  Probably anything Asian would qualify… I’m a pushover for good sushi, I’m a dim sum fiend, and I could probably eat my weight in curry, bi bim bap, or lad na.  I’m from Montana, so I don’t know where the Asian hankering comes from.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: This is a tough question, since there are few things that I categorically dislike… usually if I don’t like something, it’s because of poor preparation, not the food in question.  That being said, shrimp are icky.  I love all other (edible) crustaceans, but something about their shrimpiness just grosses me out.  That and I had to de-gut about 20 pounds of jumbos for a wedding reception once.

Favorite Place to Eat Lunch in Midtown:  I have to say the basil chicken at GoodPortions (Lex btw. 39th & 40th) is at a close tie with the chicken souvlaki at The Famous Chicken Place I recently discovered on 3rd at 39th.  For a nicer place, you can’t beat the homemade pasta at Fagiolini at 39th and Lex.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often:  Old Bridge Deli at 41st and Lex is the downfall of us all.  It’s OK food, OK prices if you know the tricks, and it’s right across the street, so it has its advantages.  Beware the “Chinese” food at the hot bar!  But their breakfast specials can’t be beat… $1.25 for a large coffee and a bagel with butter?  Shyeah!

Place you discovered on MidtownLunch.com:  Unfortunately, most lunching spots are a bit out of my walking range for lunchtime, but I did discover Oms/b, that oasis of portable rice and goodness.  I just might try Hurry and Tasty Curry this week.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why?  Seriously, I have to say Australia.  I haven’t been to the Tuck Shop yet, but I  am lusting for it.  I spent a semester abroad in Melbourne when I was in college, and I still find myself craving the fish curry at this little shop by the Uni hospital.  Food of the fishy gods.  Also, you can’t beat a continent that deep fries balls of mashed potatoes and sells them with gravy at walk-up shops on the street.  It’s also the best of both worlds because of its proximity to Southeast Asia… lots of Singaporian, Indonesian and Malaysian food.  And if you haven’t had a Tim Tam with a cup of Milo, you haven’t lived.. 

Anything else you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers?  I’m buying a condo soon, so I’m trying to scrimp and save as much as I can.  I’d love people to share their strategies for stretching a buck when eating out in Midtown and the places they go to do so…. Stuff like the Olive Garden trick: fill up on the free soup and salad, then take your entree to go.  You get three meals out of one!

Interesting… surprisingly I’ve never tried the “Olive Garden” trick.  The downside of that plan is you have to eat three meals from the Olive Garden.  For those willing to brave it, there is only one Olive Garden in Midtown- on Broadway btw. 47+48th.  (I’ll bet you the couple eating next to you, isn’t from New York…)
