ML Happy Hour: Rock Me Like A Hurricane!

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so every Friday afternoon our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” posts about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

We all know the allegory of “The Boy That Cried Wolf.” It’s on my mind right now, because I just don’t know what to believe. We were just subjected to a non-stop media blitz of “OMG! Earthquake!” which amounted to basically nothing but one lawn chair tipping over. Now we are looking at headlines of “OMG! Hurricane!” Should I be in a panic? Or is this just a creation the ‘disaster porn’ industry that is the local media? Such a conundrum, it’s enough to drive a lass to drink, I tell you.

So, I’ve decided to take preventive measures and take the hurricane down before it can do the same to me. Here are some places you can go if you’d like to follow this course of action…

ML Booze News: Grab A Hofbräu And Head To Bierhaus Tomorrow

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so every Friday afternoon our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” posts about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

bierhaus
The first time I visited to Bierhaus I brought with me a large group of revelers. The rustic banquet style wood tables, communal atmosphere and liter sized Hofbräus lent themselves perfectly to a night of brats and brews. If you haven’t been here yet, then maybe Saturday is the day to bear the wurst Bierhaus has to offer at their first Bierfest drinking competition. Stop by tomorrow from 2:00pm to 6:00pm and join in on the festivities which include playing quarters, flip cup, beer pong and a Masskrugstemmen competition. Can’t make it this weekend? A second event is set for August 27th with the finals held on Thursday, September 1st. Register now to grab a space at www.bierhausnyc.com/bierfest. You have to pay to play, but beer specials and a 15% discount will be added to any team check.

ML Happy Hour: Oh Maggie I Couldn’t Have Tried Anymore

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so I thought maybe it was time to introduce a happy hour column to the site. Every Friday afternoon our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

So we all know the drill. It was a crappy day at work, your boss was being a real jerk, and when you finally get out of the office, the heat and humidity make it feel like it’s 1,000 degrees. All you want is a cold drink in an air-conditioned place. So you just go to wherever is closest. Well I’m here to urge you to use caution, because sometimes… IT’S A TRAP!!!!!!

ML Happy Hour: Point Break Makes Me Go Whoa

I met up with the ever fabulous Blondie in Midtown recently and she clued me in to a bar that had flown under my radar called Point Break. Whoa! Seriously, a bar dedicated to the bank robbing beach bum cult classic film featuring The Swayze?? Excellent, I was up for riding that wave.

Warning: Theme bar alert! This venue features a huge kitsch factor that may turn some unrighteous dudes off.

Yeah, I know… Another Irish bar! I hear you, but if it seems like every other write-up is an Irish bar it’s because every other bar in Midtown is an Irish bar. Seriously, they are thick on the ground here. It’s as if these people had a certain reputation in regards to booze. Now, I have nothing against a good Emerald Isle watering hole, but most are carbon copies of each other with little distinguishing factors. And that’s when Connolly’s Pub stumbles in. Established in ’67 it is part of a brood of other Connolly’s in midtown. Just off 5th ave they attract the local workers looking for a tasty burger or a liquid lunch to ease the pain of cubicle life. When drinking in Midtown, I tend to pay a little (and sometimes a lot) extra for luxuries like outdoor seating, a quality selection or great food. Still, when I come across a proper bargain, I get pretty excited. So when I stumbled on a sign advertising $5 glasses of wine at L’ybane, a French Mediterranean restaurant on 8th Avenue, I knew I had to investigate.

ML Happy Hour: Is McCormick’s & Schmick Still The Best Food Happy Hour?

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so I thought maybe it was time to introduce a happy hour column to the site. Every Friday afternoon our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

A few months after I wrote that McCormick’s was one of the best food happy hours, our long time commenter Adam posted that:

“I went here tonight with a friend. The burger was fantastic for $3.95 (NOTE: Yes, it seems that they raised the price a buck, but it was still damn good). Best $4 burger I’ve ever had, and for $4 I will be back again. The burger was a perfect medium-rare, big, and juicy, and did I mention $4? This could easily become a bad habit. “

There is nothing wrong with a $4 burger, even Blarney Stone can’t beat that. I figured enough time had passed by that I should follow up on McCormick’s burger at the bar special and see what other changes had been made.

ML Happy Hour: Celebrate Independence Day Al Fresco!

For the lunchers who’ve ever experienced the wait for table during lunch at Social Eatz, there’s good news. Angelo Sosa’s quirky new eatery with an award winning burger opened their new back patio yesterday, adding 16 additional seats to the restaurant. They have also rolled out some seasonal drinks for summer time happy hours, including sangria and beer pitcher specials. This comes just in time for the long 4th of July weekend. To sweeten the deal, they’ll be giving away a free cocktail for anyone that orders dinner from 9-11pm, for the next 6 weeks. Viva la summer! And while we’re at it, huzzah to Independence Day!

Here’s a round-up of some more al fresco places to celebrate your independence this weekend, and we even give a nod to our hockey luvin pals to the north as today is also Canada Day!
