ML Happy Hour: Point Break Makes Me Go Whoa
If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so I thought maybe it was time to introduce a happy hour column to the site. Every Friday afternoon our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.
I met up with the ever fabulous Blondie in Midtown recently and she clued me in to a bar that had flown under my radar called Point Break. Whoa! Seriously, a bar dedicated to the bank robbing beach bum cult classic film featuring The Swayze?? Excellent, I was up for riding that wave.
Warning: Theme bar alert! This venue features a huge kitsch factor that may turn some unrighteous dudes off.
Point Break is the type of bar you’d expect to find near NYU, filled with frat boys and beer bongs, not amongst the suits of Midtown. That being said it can still be a sausagefest on late nights so single ladies, take note.
Decorating the walls are hula skirts, mug shots of celebrities, and a photo booth to capture these precious potent memories. Point Break movie paraphernalia includes a framed picture of The Man accented with some plastic roses. The Swayze is gone, but his memory lives on. RIP dude, hope you’re catching some narly waves in the big blue in heaven.
The staircase leading to the upstairs floors reads, “You want the ultimate thrill, you gotta be willing to pay the ultimate price.” However, the main bar is where the action is. Our attention was immediately drawn to the wheel of shots. You’ll have to decide if you trust your pals enough to take that jump with them.
Staring at that majestic wheel, I felt uncertainty gnawing at the edges of my consciousness. But then I was rescued by the wise words of The Swayze, “Fear causes hesitation and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true.” That worst fear might just be a jello shot, Jäger, or water, or if you are exceptionally lucky; an open bar.
Happy hour is Mon-Fri, 5pm-7pm with daily specials like $4 well drinks or drafts. We ordered the all day special of Keystone Ice cans for $3, because we are some classy ladies. Have you been to PB? Let us know in the comments and share your bar recommendations! Vaya con Dios, Brah!
